I taught a male student in grade 2 who wore sweater dresses because he liked them. He sometimes wore pig tails in his hair just because. The students in the class never questioned why. He told me one day he wanted to be called “May” because he wanted to be called the name of his birthday month. I did, as did his classmates without question, but some other adults in the building refused to “play that game” because he was a boy not a girl. It bothered me because I felt this student was comfortable expressing himself in a safe place but others saw it as a game he was playing not self expression.

Stay at home Dad (Sarah Whitburn)

My dad was a stay at home dad when my half-brothers were young (I was older and lived with my mom). My step-mom worked full time and it made sense for him to be home with the boys. He volunteered on field trips, took my brothers to their doctor or dentist appointments, did the laundry, cooking, and cleaning. My dad was occasionally mocked for it by extended family or friends, which really bothered me. I thought my brothers were so lucky to have a parent at home to feed them lunch, who could volunteer in class (something I did not get to experience) and not have to attend daycare (which I did).

Both working and stay at home parents are amazing. The gender construct that it "should" be a woman who stays home with kids is outdated and not practical for all families.

When I was pregnant with my first daughter, someone close to me suggested that after my one-year maternity leave, I should open up a home daycare so that I can manage taking care of my family, have an income and work around my husband's schedule. While I can appreciate that someone else we knew did this, I could not picture this for myself and thought it was so strange that this would be suggested to me because I am a woman! At this point, I was five years into my career, too and this person knew this. I liked working outside of the home and my husband and I respect each other's careers.

This past term I taught poetry to my grade 7 English class. I have more boys than girls and most of the boys are very athletic. I really thought it would be a struggle to engage them in poetry both reading/analyzing and especially writing. They have completely surprised me! Some of the best poems written were from the boys and they even wrote more poems than was required! It was refreshing to see and makes me think I have some gender biases that need to be reconsidered...

I am the head coach of our school's softball team, the only sport that is female-only. My assistant coach is a male and was actually a parent, as our assistant coach was on leave. We were at a tournament and at the coach's meetings and any time we met coaches from the other teams, 9 times out of 10 they would introduce themselves to the male assistant coach first. These experiences are frustrating as I find myself drained from having to assert myself and prove that I belong.

A few years ago I had a little boy in my class dress up as a princess for Halloween. Interestingly, the other children did not seem to notice, however parents did and commented. I personally did not read anything into the child’s choice of custume, but I was surprised that some parents felt the need to bring it to my attention. I was uncomfortable, but my reply was that is who he is and we celebrate all children for who they are.

The weird obsession with unborn babies genitallia has completely thrown me through a loop! I am expecting my second child, a boy. My first is a girl, and the amount of strange comments we have received from complete strangers has been mind boggling to say the least. "Oh one of each, you must be done!" has been a frequent one. Or, when people find out baby #2 is a boy they suggest we have to purchase all new everything, as if my daughters hand me downs will be insufficient. I find it so bizarre that before a child is even born we as a society are already making assumptions on the child's role in society, starting with what they wear.
