May 24th, 1856

John Brown, and his family settles in Kansas. He told his men that they must " strike terror in the hearts if the pro slavery people". John Brown looked to attack the sack of Lawrence. Three days after The Sacking of Lawrence. Brown as well as a couple others entered a pro-slavery town of Pottawatomie Creek. They came armed and prepared. They stromed multiple homes of their enemies, and dragged out many helpless victims, and de-headed them. John Brown's followers didnt want him to kill at the Pottawatomie Massacre, but ultimitely he decided who would die.

November 29th, 1854

Over 1,700 men from Missouri illegally voted on whether the state would have slaves in favor of turning Kansas into a slave state. This was led by Senator David Atchison, and these men where referred to as "border ruffians". They would threaten to harm (shoot, burn, hang) anyone who had something against slavery.

Anti-slavery settlers where outvoted by illegal votes by over 5,000 men who came from Missouri. This resulted in 36 pro- slavery delegates and 3 anti- slavery delegates.

October of 1855

Anti- slavery settlers made a free state constitution and elected their own governor and state legislature in Topeka, Kansan. This meant Kansas now had two different governments and would ultimately result to violence.

May 21, 1856

The Sack of Lawrence; The pro-slavery party of more than 800 men journeyed to Lawrence, KS coming from Kansas and Mississippi. They had a motive to detain members of the free state government. The pro-slavery affiliation wrecked two newspaper offices as well as threw the anti-slavery printing press into the lake. They set multiple homes and shops into flames and lastly used cannons to destroy the Free state hotel.

May 19th, 1856

A argumentative two day long speech called, "The Crime Against Kansas" was given by leader of the Republican party Senator Charles Sumner. This speech called non- abolitionists thugs and murderous robbers. He went on to insult the senator of South Carolina, Andrew Butler and call him petty insults such as idiot.

A distant cousin of Senator Andrew Butler, Representative Preston Brooks did not take kindly to this speech and took it upon himself to attack Sumner. This attack was hitting Sumner with a gold- tipped cane that would result in mental and physical injuries to the senator.

Over 200 people were killed in cold blood. The damages fo the property reach past 200 million dollars. Federal troops were sent to help maintain the fighting. The rest of the nation watched as fighting and issues broke out over slavery.
