5A Where We Are In Place & Time - Book Club Reflection by Kristin Terrell

As you are reading your fantasy novel in book clubs, please reflect on these two questions. Make sure to make the title as the date.

1. What are some features of fantasy texts you have identified?

2. Why are these features important to this genre? Use examples from your book.

1. One of the features of fantasy texts I found was setting. The setting in my text is in a castle in the year 980 AD. 2. Setting is an important feature in genre because it paints the visualization in my head. In my book, the setting is a castle. I'm able to visualize this castle due to the details of it being gray, gloomy, and as it states, "hugely immense in the middle of a creepy orchard meadow." If the setting was changed, that would change the entire story and mood.

1. March 21--One of the features of fantasy texts is the magical properties of the setting. One of the settings of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is Narnia.

In Narnia, there are mythical creatures like fauns, witches, and dwarfs. It is always winter and never Christmas. It also appears to have a different time frame as the real world.

1. Another feature of fantasy texts is the quest. In The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, the 4 kids are going on a quest to save Mr. Tumnus.
2. The quest is important to fantasies because this is usually the main problem that the characters need to solve. For example, knights go to slay the dragon, or hobbits go to find gold. In my book, the 4 children need to save Mr. Tumnus from the Witch Witch. This is going to cause lots of problems since the Witch has magic and the 4 kids don't. The 4 kids also don't know a lot about Narnia and where things are, so this quest will take a lot of bravery--which is often a common theme in fantasy texts.

1. One feature that fantasy stories have is magical characters. In my book, some characters are brave and some are shy and weak. But, they all managed to go on a quest to fix the problem. The problem is that the stream stopped flowing and they were running out of water. They need to go to the top of the mountain to find out what was happening to the stream. There is also dragon that was on the top of the mountain that Rowan had to face.
2. This is important because it shows how they solve the problem in the story and shows some of the character traits they have to show how they manage the problem. The character traits can also show their weaknesses. In my book Rowan of Rin, when they got to the swamp, they saw hallucinations of loosing their loved ones. Throughout the journey, some members of the group that joined the quest because they couldn’t overcome some of their weaknesses that appeared in the quest. On example is when there was only 3 people left, a character named Allun gave up because there was a lake and she couldn’t swim so she stayed behind. At last, there was only 2 people left but Strong John gave up so Rowan fought the dragon himself and carried strong John downhill.

The quest was to let the sweet water that stopped running down the Mountain start to come down to the village again. This is important because without the water the animals called te Bukshahs will not be able to drink water. Without the water, the Bukshahs will be thirsty and eventually, they will die.

It is in a place that no one else is around, and it is enormous. The Grimm’s house has magical things such as the magic mirror, it can tell you anything if you ask the question in a rhyming way. The house also has the slipping car, which takes you in town. I think the setting: Ferryort Landing is important because there are many everafters there. Everafters are fairytale characters. The learning along side of the main characters is important in fantasy because it allows the reader to find ot many more things about the main or just tipical characters. For example we found out that Sabrina is veryover protective of her sister Daphany and that made it easier for us readers to understand the story more. We also learned that Daphany is very adventures which doesn’t make the relationship of Sabrina and Daphany the best in the world. The learning along side the characters will let you understand the story.

1. Another feature that fantasy stories have is a magical quest. In my book, they have to go on a quest to the pit of unrin to find out what was causing the village to sleep and not wake up. In the pit of Unrin, the trees were moving to capture the characters. Rowan from Rin and Zeel that was born a Zebak and was adopted by a traveler went to the quest together.
2. This is important because the character/characters need to go on a quest to find a solution of solve a problem. The quest can also describe a new setting. If the setting is different, the characters will solve the problem a different way. For example, in my book when Rowan was solving a problem in the village, they solved it really easily, but when he went to the pit of unrin , he struggled because he never been to there before . Another reason why the quest is important is that it can also show more character traits about a person. In my book, Zeel was very brave and strong because when they went on the quest, Zeel helped Rowan fight through is problems sometimes.

Another feature of the fantasy books is the characters. Some characters are brave and annoying, and worried. The fantasy books usually have quest of main characters. In my book, “The Sisters Grimm: The Problem Child”, the problem is that Little Red Riding Hood haves Sabrina and Daphnes’ parents. The characters are important because we can infer the story by the characters’ personalities. We can also see the character traits to see how they’re going to solve the problem. In my book, “The Sisters Grimm: The problem child”, I knew Sabrina was brave, so I could infer how she fights with Jabberwocky. Also, Puck’s personality is annoying and helpful, because he helped Sabrina to run away from Jabberwocky, but he want 7 millions of dollars by saving Sabrina. However, he didn’t get any. So he was immensely mad, so he wrote “Captain Doodieface” on Sabrina’s face. One of the techniques in fantasy books, usually antagonists and protagonists fight about the power. In my book, “The Sisters Grimm; The Problem Child, book 3”, Granny Relda, Sabrina Grimm, Daphne Grimm are the protagonists.(Puck helps the Grimm family, but he is a villain of the worst kind and annoys Grimm family a lot.) On the other hand, the antagonist is the problem child, Little Red Riding Hood. She has Sabrina and Daphnes’ parents, and she controls Jabberwocky, the dragon. Sisters Grimm are fighting for their parents, and Little Red Riding Hood is not trying to give their parents.

The quest is important in fantasy because it talks about how the main character goes and searches or finds something that is not real in our world. The mountain berries cause people to fall asleep and never wake up. The cure for the curse is the slip daises. On the mountain, there is a swamp that they had to pass by and all of the villagers had hallucinations about loosing or harming the loved ones. A lot of people gave up when they passed the swamp. In Rowan and The Travelers, Rowan’s companion was Zeel, the daughter of the storyteller of the Travelers. Zeel and Rowan need to go to the Pit of Unrin together and figure how to wake the villagers.

2. The companions of the main character is important because the companion could help the main character and make it easier for the main character to finish the quest. The companion can also be transforming. In Rowan and The Travelers, at the beginning, Zeel was not trusting Rowan, then start to slowly trusting him, and at last depending on Rowan

1. Another feature of fantasy text I find is the villain. In my book “Moongobble and Me” the villain I find was Fazwad. The head of the Society of magaican and who was bad to Moongobble for testing his good heart.
2. The villain was improtant in a book because it was the bad character in fantasy story and it usally loose. in my book, Fazward was the villain the bad character because he was very fussy and mean also he was teasing Moongobble

1. Another feature of fantasy text is the literal and figurative dragons characters faced through out the book. Figurative dragons are the problems characters faced in the book. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, one of the figurative dragons Harry faced was losing the Quidditch match.
2. The literal and figurative dragons in fantasy texts are important because it shows fantasy texts have magical and unrealistic problems. I think people choose dragons meaning problems for fantasy texts to show that it’s not the normal problems people face in real life.
