My Intersectional Self by

Googles definition of Intersectional is relating to the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to an individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. I will share my experinces with how I related it to my intersectional self

The picture displays a bunch of Palestinian flags on UCR's campus. As Andre Lorde talks about the intersection of identity in the essay "Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Defining Difference", this picture in particular says a lot about as it shows the power of people's identity. As race is a key attribute for someones identity, the flags create awareness and a sense of identity for Palestinians and others. I too relate to this protest as I have also been in a protest regarding race and identity. This would be a race matter

This is a picture I took during a Black Lives Matter protest. This picture means a lot to me as it was my first protest where I wanted change to our social justice system. In the essay "The Perils of “People of Color” by Tammy Kim, explores the complexities and limitations of the term "people of color". As the term "people of color" can be oversimplified, this may negatively mask significant differences and power dynamics among various racial and ethnic groups. This is a social issue you may want to think about. This would be a race matter.

This picture is from the gym I work out at. As my padlet revolves around identity, a key factor in my identity is working out. In my opinion, as a man you should always try to better yourself for not only yourself but for your family. The gym is a perfect idea of building yourself mentally and physically to later take care of your family and yourself. I was always taught to take care of my body by living a healthy lifestyle as well as taking care of your wife. The gym plays a big factor in my identity. This would be a gender matter.

Social Support for Men(My experience)

In the reading "manning up of boys begins in the cradle.’ But what boys really need is emotional support from their dads by Andrew Reiner, explains how boys grow up with little to no emotional support and how we need to encourage effective self-agency. I feel like I experienced asking my Dad something about my past relationships and he kind of just brushed it off and wanted me to deal with it myself. This is a concept that needs more awareness for young men to grow and are leading them to in the right path. I think parents tend to lend more emotional support to toddlers and girls more so to men. This would be a gender matter.

As you can see in the picture, there is a soccer ball. Growing up in the low/middle class, I never wanted to have my mother spend money on me. Soccer was a sport that was affordable and valuable. As I truly believe that men should be able to take care of their family, I always tell myself that I need to make it to the pro leagues. This is why soccer is part of my identity. It's what I love and what I will always do. This would be a social class matter. Soccer gave me this opportunity to go out of the poor/middle social class.
