According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), in 2020 Indonesia's ocean areas were polluted by around 1,772.7 grams of waste per square meter (g/m2).

Considering that the total area of Indonesia's seas is 3.25 million km2, it can be estimated that the total amount of rubbish in the archipelago's seas as a whole has reached 5.75 million tons.

The most common type of waste found was plastic waste, with a weight of 627.80 g/m2. This amount accounts for 35.4% of the total waste in Indonesian seas in 2020.

Apart from plastic waste, glass and ceramic waste is also quite large, reaching 226.29 g/m2 or 12.76% of the total waste in the sea.

Then as much as 224.76 g/m2 of waste in Indonesia's seas is in the form of metal. Followed by waste in the form of wood 202.36 g/m2 and other waste 173.73 g/m2.

There was also rubber waste amounting to 110.64 g/m2, plastic foam waste 56.68 g/m2, and paper and cardboard waste amounting to 21.86 g/m2.

Climate change affects all aspect of life including ecosystems, economies, and societies. Some key target of this SDG are strengthening resilience to climate hazards, integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies, and planning, and improving education and awareness-raising about climate changes.

SDG 14: Life Below Water aims to conserve the sustainability of ocean and marine resources. Earth consists of more than 70% oceans and seas, therefore it plays a crucial role in regulating global climate, food security, and facility international trade. This SDG seeks to address ocean pollution and habitat destruction by promoting conservation of marine resources, reducing marine pollution, and enhancing scientific knowledge of marine biodiversity.
