This allows the students to show empathy when looking at the spec and we teach considerations of gender and culture biases and how this impacts research and individuals too.

In PE we will often assign students leadership roles and us as teachers will only give instructions to these few students (3-6). Those students then go and lead a task that I have given them.

Generally students are really motivated by competition and students find it nice to hear instruction from someone else. Leaders grow in these roles and relish the opportunity to give instruction. You can also assign other roles to the teams (scribe, critical thinkers etc).

If the task is not going to plan we’ll often call the leaders back in, highlight misconceptions, and ask them to tackle the problem.
