Ethical problems with the tool itself

I am reposting my comment from the chat: One issue with ethical use is that Generative AI is using an enormous (mind-blowing) amount of natural resources, and was trained unethically on people’s writing without their consent and often in violation of copyright. We may have ethical issues with using it at all, and with training it further by using it and asking students to use it.

Ethical Use of Automated, Data Driven Systems is perhaps too narrow, we perhaps need a framework that actually names "epistemic rights"

We have to actively create healthy, public, safe spaces for everyone in these spaces. Situating ethical concerns in this space feels more natural than trying to have a conversation about how to ethically use AI in the discourse which is currently driven by corporations.

Learning activity for AI ethics for industry contexts

IBM SkillsBuild has a free course, AI Ethics, which covers what they call the 5 Pillars of AI Ethics. It does not cover all of the bigger "human" and environmental issues but provides an understanding for students who are going into industries--marketing, healthcare management, technology, law enforcement, retail--where they will be using AI tools and be part of decision-making or product teams. I would recommend for students in business, CIS fields, data science, even psychology since many grads will be employed in areas like HR or healthcare mgmt. This study reflects my biggest concerns. I'm on the fence in many ways--I think these tools are here and we need to find ways to teach students about what they are, how to use them and learn about issues like algorithmic bias. Technology is not neutral and Gen AI in education will lead to an even bigger digital divide. I teach an intro to STS and my students and I approach the tools critically, even when we use them as part of assignments. While I have cautiously incorporated some AI use in my teaching, I have a fundamental ambivalence about whether "ethical" AI is even possible and I share that ambivalence with my students.
