“High school isn't a very important place. When you're going you think it's a big deal, but when it's over nobody really thinks it was great unless they're beered up.”

This quote is important to the story as it highlights one of Carrie's main conflicts. She is bullied and abused by other students at school, but in the end she comes out on top, inadvertently using her powers to kill everybody.

"Sorry is the Kool-Aid of human emotions. It's what you say when you spill a cup of coffee or throw a gutter ball when you're bowling with the girls in the league. True sorrow is as rare as true love."

The quote from a character is saying that the word sorry is empty of meaning in our society. This relates directly to the characters conflict. Carrie has been abused by her mother and even other kids throughout her life. Is saying sorry and feeling remorse really enough to make reparations for that?

"Girls stretched and writhed under the hot water, squalling, flicking water, squirting white bars of soap from hand to hand. Carrie stood among them stolidly, a frog among swans. She was a chunky girl with pimples on her neck and back and buttocks, her wet hair completely without color. It rested against her face with dispirited sogginess and she simply stood, head slightly bent, letting the water splat against her flesh and roll off. She looked the part of the sacrificial goat, the constant butt, believer in left-handed monkey wrenches, perpetual foul-up, and she was. She wished forlornly and constantly that Ewen High had individual—and thus private— showers, like the high schools at Westover or Lewiston. They stared. They always stared."

This paragraph is right at the beginning of the book, and does a great job at indirectly characterizing Carrie. The paragraph highlights the fact that she is a self conscious, anxious high schooler. This aspect of the story is very relevant to one of the main conflicts in the school, the buildup of stress from her negative experiences with bullying and anxiety.

The moment when Carrie intended to use her powers to inconvenience the students at the prom, but accidentally killed two people.

After being the victim of a vicious prank at the prom, she ran out and used her powers to cause chaos. In the chaos, 2 people were electrocuted. This was the first real instance of her using her powers to get some revenge on the people that wronged her, whether or not it was on purpose. This marks a turning point in the story.

The moment when Carrie is dying in the parking lot after being stabbed by her mother, and she is found by Sue.

Carrie finds out that Sue had nothing to do with the prank, and that there were some people on her side, even if it seemed like she was always the victim. This is the end of her life, and concludes her part of the story. It marks the completion of her character arc. Initially she was a victim of trauma and abuse, then she began to fight back. Eventually, she had remorse for her actions in fighting back, and realized that she wasn't all alone after all.
