Biological obsessions and compulsions are in overly aroused brain areas and are involved in impulse control and habitual behaviors. Fear-learning experiences can traumatize the brain which can create brain circuits within amygdala.
Anterior cingulate cortex is a brain region that monitors our actions and checks for errors. Hyperactive in those with OCD. Fears can also be blunted by giving people drugs as they recall a traumatic experience. Although they don't forget the experience, the associated emotion is largely erased.

Genes matter. Identical twins often develop similar phobias even when raised separately. For example, two identical twins were afraid of water and wouldn't go in the ocean except backwards. Researchers are investigating the specific genes associated with anxiety disorder symptoms and so far they have found 17 genes. Genes influence disorders by regulating neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and glutamate. With too much glutamate, the brain's alarm centers become over activated which leads to an individual developing OCD.
