In 2014, the government proposed the idea of a North Dakota oil pipeline that would go through Native American Reservation. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has always opposed this offer, however the resistance only gained power in late 2016 when thousands of protesters, many of which are Native Americans, gathered to block the 1,200 - mile project.

For this $3.8 billion project, there are quite a few investors who would prefer to see the project succeed. Among these include, the pipeline company itself, Energy Transfer Partners (ETC), a Fortune 500 oil and natural gas company, they, along with Sunoco Logistics Partners and Phillips 66, are the main owners of the pipeline. The Governor of North Dakota, Jack Dalrymple, urged ETC to build more pipelines to keep up with the other large oil producing states such as Texas.

After doing all of the research required for this project, I thought that I would include what my opinion was. I do support the freedom to peacefully protest and commend the Standing Rock Tribe for doing so, however, I do believe that the government and the ETC have every right to be building the pipeline where it is currently located because it does not cross reservation land and it would not affect their water supply. It will be completely underground so it won't even be an eye sore once it's finished. It will supply the country with more affordable power that will only benefit
