In ancient times, Greece was not a unified country, rather it was a collection of hundreds of city-states. The first Greek state, named Mycenae, was a fortified site founded by a German archaeologist by the name of Heinrich Schliemann. The early Greek civilization flourished between 1600 and 1100 BCE. Mycenean Greeks were considered part of the Indo-European people who spread into southern and western Europe, India, and Iran. One of these groups eventually entered Greece from the north around 1900 B.C. The group managed to gain control of the Greek mainland and develop a civilization.

Christianity posed a serious threat to early Romans. Christianity contrasted the idea of polytheism, the belief in several gods, by practicing monotheism, the belief in one god, which was offensive to traditional Romans. Christianity was considered criminal and was harshly punished. Christians suffered from occasional persecutions for over 250 years. Christianity began within Judaism. After hearing that Jesus had overcome death, the Christians gained followers in Jerusalem and throughout Judaea and Galilee. In the second century, persecution of Christians diminished. Under Theodosius the Great, a ruler from 378-395, Christianity was adopted as the official religion of the Roman Empire.
