Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India late 1865. He was a writer best known for his late victorian poets and story tellers. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1907, his unpopular political views resulted in neglecting of his work following his death. Before this he was a principal at Jeejeebyhoy School of art. Years 1871 to 1877 were years of misery for Kipling. A quote from 'Gale' states; "in addition to feelings of bewilderment and abandonment, Kipling had to suffer bullying from the women of the house and her son" wrote Mary a. O'Toole.

Danny Deever displays the 6 elements of characterization. Here are examples Says: "What are the bugles blown for?" Explanation: he somewhat mocks a ceremony for murdering him since he murdered someone too
What others say: "Im dreading' what I've got to watch" Explanation: this characterizes him because its a shame for what has to happen
Does: 'It's Danny fighting' and for life,' Explanation: he took someones life and is now "fighting" for his own, but not really, also giving a peak into his mental state as an entirety
React: "It's Danny fightin' ard for life" Explanation: This is an example of how he is characterized one reaction because who wouldn't fight for their life. The irony about this is, he isn't really fighting

Literary Devices

The first part of the stanza is revealing. It reveals what Danny Deever did and his reactions to what has happened. It also shows the color sergeants quick answers to Files pestering questions. These pestering questions/answers have an example such as, "It's bitter cold," and "a touch o' sun." This is a contradiction because weather cannot be hot and cold. However, the devices change from 'revealing' to confusion as to what circumstances he is in. This can also, again, give the reader a look into Danny Deever's mental state

Protagonist unhappiness

Danny Deever faces unhappiness during the poem of the same name but the ready does not know why that is, until later on in the poem. The reader learns the poem is about an execution of a soldier whom murders another soldier within his regiment. "I'm dreadin' what I've got to watch, For they're hanging' Danny Deever.' This is pretty self explanitory as to why the poems protagonist is unhappy.

The main characters from both works, Death of a Salesman and Danny Deever, share some similarities that are pretty cut and dry. For example, both Willy from Death of a Salesman and Danny Deever from the poem of the same name are both unhappy, but for different reasons. And this is about all the two really have in common. They are both unhappy because of the stresses of life, which to be fair everyone feels. Willy Loman is unhappy because of multiple reasons. For example, one reason Willy is unhappy is he's not able to remember everything going on. He says, "No, its me, its me. Suddenly realize I'm goin' sixty miles an hour and I don't remember the last five minutes." This is one of multiple reasons Willy Loman is currently unhappy. An example quote from 'Danny Deever' would be all the questions he asked. Specifically, "whats that that whimpers over 'ead" followed by the color sergeant saying "its Danny's soul that's passion' now." These give a grim look as to the reason the "protagonist," Danny Deever is unhappy... He's going to be executed
