The first people in our state, were Native Americans. There were about 30 tribes already established when the English colonist came over on ships. The Native Americans that the colonists ran into were considered to be Paleo-Indians. Their ancestors, Archaic-Indians were known to travel around by foot and even hollow out trees to make canoes. The trips they made on boats way back then would have been 2 1/2 months of traveling, where as today we can do that in several hours.
