Rehabilitation act 

1973

This law ensures no one with a disability can be discriminated against

This law is also a way students can get modifications without having an IEP 

This law benefits anyone with a disability 

This affects Special Education as it keeps anyone under IDEA protected from being discriminated against and is another type of I’ll call it a “branch” of modification or differentiated plan

The American with a Disability Act

1990

This basically says an employer can’t not give you a job due to your disability if you are qualified

This Law helps people with a disability in the “real world”

This benefits those with a disability as they can not be turned down due to their diagnoses

This benefits the Special Education world as it ensure equality for those individuals when they are on their own

Education for handicapped Children Act

1975

This guarantee free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to each child with a disability 

This is unique as this is our first Law including children 

This will ensure no child with a disability will be refused education by the state ensuring they will be treated the same way other are (with the acception of appropriate modification)

This of course effects the Special Education realm as “children” or “kids” are who we are teaching 

(IDEA) Individuals with a Disability Act

1990

This Law is to protect all individuals who fall under the 13 categories 

This is the first law we learned about that has multiple tiers to it

This affects all who fall under any of the 13 categories under IDEA

This of course helps in the Special Education realm as it protects people with disabilities

Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004

2004

This law focuses more on accountability and improve outcomes of early intervention and research based education 

This is helpful in the world of Special Education because it further ensures the best outcomes for individuals with a disability 

No Child Left Behind Act 

2001

This law requires schools to look into the academic achievement in every student (to help the ones that typically fall through the cracks)

This is unique as this is the first law to ensure all students regardless of ability are seen

This effects the Special Education realm as this will help hold the accountable to make sure they really see all the students

1971

The state said the child was “uneducable”. This was in regards to a student with an intellectual disability. It was then favored that the state agreed to provide free public education, even to those with intellectual disabilities. 

1982

In this case Rawley was the family with a deaf child and thought the school should provide their child with an interpreter. In this case the Board of Education won as the child was in the LRE and they do not need to provide an interpreter.

1989

This case was due to Daniel being denied to be in a classroom with non disabled students. The school won as the special education classroom was the LRE for Daniel.

1993 was the year inclusion started 

In 1990 was when the court case was held. The student with down syndrome was able to participate with students who were not disabled in as many appropriate events as possible. 

1999

In this case thai is where they ruled schools are required to provide school health services to a qualified school nurse or other qualified person.
