A parent once got upset because their child wasn’t allowed to join a field trip, thinking it was due to favoritism. I explained that school policy states students with three or more unexcused absences aren’t eligible for off-campus activities, and I showed them the rule in the handbook.

From this, I learned the value of clear communication and empathy. Parents just want what’s best for their children, and by listening, explaining calmly, and being transparent, I was able to clear the misunderstanding and build trust.

I remember a time when a parent felt that I was pressuring her child to wear the school uniform. I explained that it’s important for children to practice wearing their uniform at school so they can learn the difference between home clothes and school clothes. I also let her know that we really appreciate their support, as they know their child best and can help reinforce this at home. From this experience, I realised how important it is to patiently explain the reasons behind school rules and to work together with parents to support the child’s learning and independence.

A parent was upset that her child is not able to enter the school due to that the child has spots in her mouth and on her feet. I explained to the mother that she has symptoms of HFMD and requires her help to monitor her health at home. I also suggested that she can seek doctor's help if she observes more spots in her child. Mother was upset that her child cannot attend school and disrupts her work. She is also unable to send her to the doctor However, after much persuasion, mother send her to the clinic and informed us about the confirmed case and she requested to speak to me over the phone. She apologised for being rude and thanked me for showing concern to her child.

Mine was not about the school rules. As I am very new to the centre, a couple of parents felt that my update was not as frequent as the previous years' teachers. So I just responded that I will try my best to update more often via Taiidii and to speak to them more during drop off & pick up.

I learned that when informing parents about a certain school rules (such as children are encouraged to wear covered shoes to school), it is also important to highlight about their children's safety. I would share incidents such as children tend to fall while running if they wear slippers or rubber shoes like Crocs in an outdoor activity.

One instance was when a parent misunderstood the centre's breakfast policy and expected breakfast to be provided after the designated breakfast timing. I calmly explained the rationale behind the policy, including the importance of maintaining routines and ensuring children transition smoothly into the day's programme. Different parents have different ways of getting things understood. When we teach a class of auditory learners, for example, we use sounds to teach, they are attracted to us and want to hear us out. I ever met a parent when I was still a teacher and she was a visual learner. I noticed the speed in which she talked was quite fast. When I showed her evidences of her kid doing not very fine(disturbing peers with home brought toy when toys were only encouraged during show and tell with the relevant topic) in class via short clips, she believed it!

When I was taking younger classes, it was a constant situation whereby some children would suddenly revert back to crying at the school door, refuse to come to school, etc. It was a challenge to reassure parents and children that they are safe with us, especially when certain parents are quick to judge or hesitant to let go. However, after countless reassurances, meeting them at the front door, sharing of pictures and updates, parents eventually trusted me and were asking for me if their child was having a bad morning. Children also showed vast improvements over time and began walking into the school compound on their own!

Lesson learned: some children and parents require time to settle down. On my end, i did what i could to build the trust and kept communications open with parents.
