- Direct descendant of Puritan colonist from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 
-1774 he served on the First Continental Congress 
-1775 (age 20) he studied law in the office of James Putnam, who was a lawyer. 
1758- was admitted to the bar once he received his masters degree. 
--Very patriotic he had greatly opposed the Stamp Act of 1765
