Who was Helga Weiss?

Helga Weiss was a fifteen year survivor of the holocaust who lied about her age to escape death during the holocaust. Helga Weiss was ten years old when she had to quit school due to the war going on. After years of the war going on her an her mom were transported to Aushwitz, in 1945. They fooled one of the most reviled men in modern history, Helga and her mother convinced the guards that she was eighteen years of age, she was then sent to terezin where she did labor work. After a while of being there she escaped death a second time by surviving a 16 day "death march" to a camp at Mauthausen. Helga stayed at this camp until they were liberated on May the fifth 1945.

"I asked Helga whether it had felt wonderful to be liberated," said Butterfield. "She said, no, it was not that special because by that point she was so ill and had seen so many terrible things it was hard to feel anything."

Helga said that there were moments of happiness but most times hard and sad. Helga stated in an interview that she suffered many sicknesses and the fear of being deported from her parents. She also stated that she had fun, she made friends,organized dances and fell in love!

Helga's diary started when she was ten, the war had just started resulting in her having to quit school. The diary explains and goes into details about her everyday life, and the things that happen. Helga was one of around 150 to survive being sent to Terezin. The Nazis covered up a massive genocide she stated. Helga's father disappeared after a while and so did many other people in the concentration camps. While Helga was sent to Terezin her uncle took over diary. Helga was sent a march when the Russian troops arrived while the Nazis were trying to kill everyone but it failed. Helga and her mother struggled due to the fact of years of starvation.
