One of this aspect of culture that call my attention was about garbage. In Panama, we have been fighting against this situation in keeping our country clean. We most stop strowing garbage in the street and everywhere we go.

Another difference is puntuality. Base on my experience, I think that we should not let people wait fir us or be late. This not okey in my case. American has some good culture that we Panamenian have to practice for better development of our country.

Panamanians typically greet each other with a handshake or a cheek kiss, and it’s customary to address people using their titles (e.g., Señor, Señora) rather than first names, especially in professional settings.

3. Family and Community Orientation.
Family is at the heart of Panamanian culture. Extended families often live close to each other, and family gatherings are frequent and highly valued. This strong family orientation can be a welcome change for Americans who might miss a close-knit family environment. However, it can also mean that individual privacy and independence are less emphasized.

A Comparison of American and Panamanian Culture.

Panamanian culture. is a hybrid of African, Native Panamanian, and European culture - specifically Spanish. For example, the tamborito is a Spanish dance that was blended with Native American rhythms and dance moves. Dance is a symbol of the diverse cultures that have coupled in Panama. The local folklore can be experienced through a multitude of festivals, dances and traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation.

American culture encompasses the customs and traditions of the United States. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things," said

American Language: There is no official language of the United States, according to the government. While almost every language in the world is spoken in the United States, the most frequently spoken non-English languages are Spanish, Chinese, French and German.

Panamanian language: Numerous languages are used by Panama's population, the dominant one being Spanish. Panama has seven native groups which speak several indigenous languages. Spanish has official status in Panama, and about 14% of the population use English as well.

American Religious: Nearly every known religion is practiced in the United States, which was founded on the basis of religious freedom. About 70% of Americans identify themselves as Christians, according to information gathered by the Pew Research Center, a nonpartisan research group, in 2017.

Panamanian Religious: The predominant religion in Panama is Christianity, with Catholic Church being its largest denomination. Before the arrival of Spanish missionaries, the various ethnic groups residing in the territory of modern day Panama practiced a multitude of faiths.

American cuisine

Traditional American cuisine uses ingredients such as turkey, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn (maize), squash, and maple syrup, as well as indigenous foods employed by American Indians and early European settlers, African slaves, and their descendants.

Panamanian Cuisine. Since Panama is a land bridge between two continents, it has a large variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and herbs that are used in native cooking.

Typical Panamanian foods are mildly flavored, without the pungency of some of Panama's Latin American and Caribbean neighbors.

American holidays: Many holidays are celebrated only in the United States. Americans celebrate their independence from Britain on July 4. Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday in May, honors those who have died in military service. Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, celebrates the country's workforce. thanksgiving, another distinctive American holiday, falls on the fourth Thursday in November and dates back to colonial times to celebrate the harvest.

Panamanian holidays: Panama holidays celebrate its rich cultural and geographic diversity. If you were to go to the Flower and Coffee festival in the Chiriqui Highlands, you will gain an insight into the wonderful landscapes that shape the country’s interior. Head over to the Bocas del Toro Sea Fair and you will see why the oceans are so important to this nation’s heritage. Spanish influence and Roman Catholicism they brought are an important part of Panamanian culture, yet certainly blended with Latin American flare, and the annual Carnaval is set to not disappoint party-goers.

American Marriage laws are established by individual states. The typical wedding involves a couple proclaiming their commitment to one another in front of their close relatives and friends, often presided over by a religious figure such as a minister, priest, or rabbi, depending upon the faith of the couple.

American Divorce is the province of state governments, so divorce law varies from state to state. Prior to the 1970s, divorcing spouses had to allege that the other spouse was guilty of a crime or sin like abandonment or adultery; when spouses simply could not get along, lawyers were forced to manufacture "uncontested" divorces.

Panamanian marriage: Although Guaymí Indian leaders may have more than one wife, other Panamanians marry only one spouse at a time.

Panamanian Divorce: Divorce is permitted under liberal terms by the Civil Code. Couples of African descent on the Atlantic coast tend to live together without marrying. These unions frequently dissolve as men and women may find new partners during the weekly pre-carnival Congo dances.

American Education: Education in the United States is and has historically been provided mainly by the government. Control and funding come from three levels: federal, state, and local. School attendance is mandatory and nearly universal at the elementary and high school levels (often known outside the United States as the primary and secondary levels).

Panamanian education: Education in Panama is compulsory for the first six years of primary education and the first three years of secondary school .

According to the video, some similarities and differences between American and Panamanian culture are:

USA has a population of more than 300 million people while Panama is just 4 million.

Both cultures share a variety of races and languages.

Most Americans are very independent since a young age, but Panamanians are always very close and dependent on their relatives.

Americans can talk easily to homeless people while Panamanians avoid, most of the time, any contact with them.

American teenagers wear strange clothes and peircings but Panamanian teenagers wear nice and fashion clothes and usually start using peircings when they become adults.

Americans follow the rule of law, in change, most Panamanians find the way to brake the rules.

Actions like littering, loitering and graffity are punishable with jail or a fine. In Panama, all these actions are punishable but most of the time the offenders do not receive any fine or punishment.

Americans get their ID card to buy and drink alcohol at 21 years old. Panamanians get it at 18 years old.

In both cultures, cigarrettes are illegal under the age of 18.

Americans and Panamanians are very informal when calling people. They use people's first name or a nickname to do it.

Americans use the expression "How are you?" just as a greeting, while panamanians use it to know about other people's health.

Americans always wait their turn in a line but a lot of Panamanians try to take advantage over other's people turn.

When going at a restaurant, American servers are very friendly and mention his/her name. Panamanian servers can be friendly but never mention their name.

Americans never go to someone's house without calling first. Panamanians go to other people house whenever they want without a previous call or invitation.

In USA is not uncommon to find men or women sharing an apartment without having any sexual relationship. In Panama, if a man and a woman share apartment is because they are in a sexual relationship.

In American weddings and parties people register for gifts at a specific place. In Panama, people buy the gifts they like and sometimes are asked to give money as gift.

Rarely, in Americans parties there is music and dancing while Panamanians parties are full of music, dancing and drinking.

Polite americans use one hand to eat, but Panamanians use both hands.

If the service is good in a restaurant, Americans give 15-20% of the bill as tip.

American Culture Characteristics

Panamanian Culture Characteristics

1. Americans are extremely independent.

Panamanians used to be family codependent.

2. 66% of Americans are overweight.

I think Panamanians are not far of this situation. Many obese people in our country.

3. 1% of population is homeless.

Well, I think we do not have to many homeless. Because our population is just around 4 million people.

4. The streets of major cities are often dirty.

This is a similar situation in major cities, especially in Panama City.

5. Many people especially teenagers wear strange clothes, have tattoos, and body piercings.

Due to the parents ´influence so far we do not have too many teenagers with tattoos or body piercings.

6. Americans follow the rule of law.

For Panamanians is kind of difficult to follow the rules of law. Because they will not face many consequences breaking the law.

7. Littering, graffiti and tagging, and loitering are against of the law and are punishable by fine or jail.

In Panamá, we do not have that kind of punishment.

8. You must be over the age of 21 and you must have identification with photo to buy or drink alcohol.

Here teenagers drink alcohol without restrictions. I mean even their parents provide it to them.

9. In most states, it is illegal to buy cigarettes under the age of 18. Smoke in certain places.

Here it is illegal, but anyway teenagers

Have access to cigarettes.

10. Americans are extremely informal call people by their first name or nickname.

Well, I think that sometimes we called people by their nickname. Depending of the relationship we have with the person.

11. Americans smile a lot and easily talk to strangers.

I think we are not as friendly as Americans. I do not used to smile with strangers.

12. Americans wait their turn. ( in line)

Panamanians do not like to wait their turn.

13. Servers in restaurant are friendly and helpful and often tell their names.

I think that some servers in Panama are not as friendly as Americans. Here in Panama are like cold in that sense, maybe is a cultural issue.

14. When you meet Americans look them in the eye, smile, and shake hands.

Sometimes we just shake hands, but not have that eye contact as close.

15. Never go to someone´s house without calling first.

Some Panamanians just get someone´s house without announcing, and sometimes is embarrassing.

16. Time is money. Never be late.

Panamanians do not respect the time of others. WE have to work on that.

17. Some Americans hug a lot.

Well, I do not like to hug everybody. Just to my family and sometimes.

18. It is not uncommon for Americans that men and women share an apartment as roommates.

Here in Panama is not well seeing. People begin gossiping.

19. American parents speak to their children as adults and teach them to be responsible to their actions.

well, Panamanian parents are very fraternalistic, so we have codependent children.

20. American parents encourage their children to questions and always ask why?

I think the majority of Panamanian parents encourage their children to questions and ask the reasons of their behavior.

American culture and Panamanian culture differ in several ways, reflecting their unique histories and influences.

Individualism vs. Collectivism: American culture tends to emphasize individualism, with a strong focus on personal achievement and independence. In contrast, Panamanian culture leans towards collectivism, where family and community ties are central, and group harmony is highly valued.

Time Orientation: In the U.S., punctuality and efficiency are important, with a strong adherence to schedules. Meanwhile, in Panama, people often have a more relaxed approach to time, valuing personal interactions over strict timelines.

Communication Style: Americans are typically direct in their communication, getting straight to the point. Panamanians, on the other hand, tend to be more indirect and polite, often using more context and nuance in conversations to avoid confrontation.

Diversity: The U.S. is highly diverse, with a blend of cultures, ethnicities, and religions from around the world. Panama, while also diverse, has a smaller population with a strong influence of Afro-Caribbean, indigenous, and Spanish traditions.

These cultural differences shape the way people interact, value relationships, and approach life in each country.

America is enormous: the third largest country in the world with a population of more than 300 million people.

Panama is a small country but is considered as connection hub of both Americans.

Americans come in all colors, have all types of religions, and speak many languages from all over the world.

Panama has a diversity of culture but in a smaller percentage than in the USA. Due to the Panama canals jobs many people came to this country and establish here.

Americans are extremely independent, individualistic, and like to be different from each other.

Panamanian culture, emphasizes community and familial ties, prioritizing social harmony and collective well-being. The group matters as much as the individual.

66% of Americans are overweight; 37% of those are obese.

In Panama, obesity rates are lower compared to the U.S. with about 30.6% of adult women and 20.4% of adult men living with obesity. In contrast, 66% of Americans are overweight, with 37% being obese.

Americans believe in freedom of choice.

In Panama, freedom of choice is valued, but with a stronger emphasis on community and social harmony compared to the American focus on individualism.

Americans need a lot of "elbow room"; they like personal space around them.

Panamanians typically have a more relaxed approach to personal space, valuing close and warm interactions. It's common to see people greeting each other with hugs and cheek kisses, reflecting the importance of social closeness and connectedness in their culture.

Approximately 1% of Americans are homeless (3.5 million people).

In Panama, homelessness is a significant issue, but specific data is less available compared to the U.S. Economic challenges have increased the visibility of homeless individuals and families.

Americans talk easily to the homeless but use good judgment and are careful with whom they talk.

In Panama, interactions with the homeless can vary. While there is a sense of community and empathy, social and economic challenges can affect how people respond. Some may offer help or engage with compassion, while most of the time others might be cautious due to safety concerns or social stigma.

Sadly, the streets of major cities are often dirty.

Panama is actively working to improve street cleanliness, particularly in major cities like Panama City, where sweeper trucks help manage debris and litter. While challenges remain, efforts toward environmental sustainability are growing.

Many people, especially teenagers, wear strange clothes, and many have tattoos and body piercings

Panamanians also embrace fashion trends, tattoos, and body piercings, especially among the youth. However, traditional cultural values still play a significant role, creating a unique blend of modern and traditional expressions.

Americans follow the rule of law.

In Panamá, while the rule of law is upheld, challenges like corruption and resource allocation affect its perception and effectiveness. Efforts are ongoing to strengthen legal systems, though it's a complex landscape compared to the U.S.

Littering (throwing garbage on the street), graffiti and tagging (writing on the walls), and loitering (standing around and doing nothing) are against the law and are punishable by a fine or jail.

In Panama, littering, graffiti, and loitering are also against the law and can result in fines or other penalties The country is working to improve cleanliness and enforce these laws more effectively, especially in urban areas.

Discriminating against or making any insulting statement about someone else's religion or ethnicity is against the law and could be punishable as a hate crime.

In Panama, discrimination based on religion or ethnicity is prohibited, and there are laws against hate crimes However, enforcement and public awareness can vary, and challenges remain in fully addressing these issues.

You must be over the age of 21 and you must have an identification card with a photo to buy or drink alcohol.

In contrast, in Panama, you must be at least 18 years old to buy or consume alcohol Identification is required to ensure age compliance.

In most states, it is illegal to buy cigarettes if you are under the age of 18 and often you can only smoke in certain places.

In Panama, it's illegal for anyone under 18 to buy cigarettes. Smoking is also restricted in many public places, including streets, parks, and near entrances of buildings. Designated smoking areas are limited, and enforcement is aimed at reducing public smoking.

Americans are extremely informal and call most people by their first name or nickname.

Panamanians are generally more formal than Americans, often using titles and last names initially. As relationships grow closer, they might switch to first names or nicknames. This formality reflects respect and warmth in their culture.

Americans smile a lot and talk easily to strangers, sharing personal stories.

Panamanians might initially be a bit more reserved about sharing personal stories compared to Americans, preferring to build trust and familiarity first. Once a connection is established, they become quite open and engaging.

Asking "How are you?" is simply a greeting and is not a question about your health.

In Panama, asking "How are you?" is also commonly used as a greeting. While it can be an invitation to share how you're doing, it's often just a polite way to say hello and doesn't necessarily expect a detailed response about one's health.

When Americans put their hands on their hips, they are usually relaxed; when they fold their arms tightly across their chests, they are angry or very serious (or cold).

In Panama, body language can be similar. Hands on hips often suggest relaxation or confidence, while folding arms tightly across the chest might indicate seriousness, defensiveness, or feeling cold. However, cultural nuances may add different layers of meaning. Body language is just one piece of the communication puzzle.

Americans don't push or stand too close to anyone in line. They always wait their turn.

In Panama, personal space in lines can be less strictly observed compared to the U.S. While most people respect the concept of waiting their turn, it's not uncommon for people to stand a bit closer together. The approach can feel more relaxed and less rigid.

Another relevant features is the culture. It has been presented the contribution of the Padlet, that everyone points out that American Culture have important approach to do something, such as, the phrase of "Time is Money" as Panamanian, we do not have that approach to consider "late" as a lack of respect.

Another one, the education. Many American education emphasize to allow children learn important things such as, the responsability of their actions, but in Panamanian education, it's emphasize according to general abilities like, run, paint, and actions that children can do.

                               CONCLUSION

In my own opinion, I consider the American culture as a follow up model, because as a Panamanian, we have many errors and mistakes, that I consider is full of negligence and little interest.
