CHILDREN JUST LIKE ME

This book is a great non fiction guide to show children what their peers in other countries like to do. This book doesn't necessarily focus on the differences of the children, it more interviews a child from a certain country and lets the reader decide what similarities or differences between them and the child in the book.
A good activity to do before reading this book is to have students fill out a profile about themselves: what they like to do, what clubs or sports they are in, their favorite foods, colors, and animals are. Once they are filled out students can present them and as a class they could discuss how even in their small class room students have a wide variety of similarities and differences. After reading the book, the class can be led in a discussion how their interests match up to the children in the book.
To add a 21st century component to the assignment, children could create a glogster or an equivalent following the layout of the book about themselves using the profiles they made before reading the book.

In this book, a little orphan boy doesn't know his real name, or what country he came from. One day he goes on a class trip to Disney Land and takes goes on the "Its a Small World" ride. He sees people from all over the world doing a whole bunch of different things. At the end of the ride he realizes that "a smile means friendship to everyone" and that even though he didn't know what country he belonged to, a part of him belonged to every country and vice versa.
This book is good to show children that no matter where we come from we are all people who laugh, love, and have fun. This book also has a technological component- it comes with audio, not only is it read aloud but through out the book there are bits and pieces of the song sang in different languages in some sections!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IPKaG3fuqk

School Days Around the World

Looking to introduce your students how children in other countries learn? This book is perfect! In "School Days Around the World" the author takes us on a journey around the world to schools in 13 different countries. The book begins by asking students "What is school?" we then embark around the world.
A good introductory activity for this book would be to ask your class what they think school is, what they do there, what their favorite part of the day is, etc. After reading the book you can revisit the discussion and ask what their favorite part of school in a different country is. The book also provides a bunch of discussion topics.

Two children from different ends of the world become best friends through becoming pen pals. They learn that they are the same, even though their surroundings look different. This book is great to show children that not only do you never know who you might become friends with, but that the world is a smaller place than it seems.
A great activity with this book would to organize a pen pal program with a different school (preferably in a different country). This way students can engage with the book on a whole different level - like they are living the book. To add a 21st century component into this activity, instead of old fashioned letters students can use email another electronic platform.

Students realize that even teachers have families after their teacher tells them she will soon be a grandmother. Before long everyone in class wanted to share about what made their family special and unique.
A great discussion after this book would be for students to either share or write down what makes their family unique.

In this non fiction picture book, the author shows are people dress all over the world, whether its for school, celebrations, or to play. There are beautiful images filled with color from cover to cover. This book is an eye appealing way to show how "dressing up" means something different for everyone. Before starting this activity, a class discussion on how someone should dress up could be had - starting children on thinking about the idea. After reading the book children may be surprised to see that there are a lot more ways to dress up than they thought.

Everyone is the same on the inside and should be treated as such. This book tells kids that they should be kind to others even if they look different because nothing makes someone better than the other.

The author tells us that it is okay to be different no matter what. Everything from adoption to eating macaroni in the bath tub is discussed - fusing together the more difficult topics with lighter ones to lighten the mood. This book is great to show kids that they should be comfortable to be themselves no matter what, and also to be nice to others even if they are different - because that is okay! Being different makes us all special in our own way. If everyone was the exact same the world would be a much more boring place.
