Hello friends! :) My name is Cheyanne and I am 20 years old, currently working on getting my Wellness Coaching Certificate as well as the IHP degree. It's been A LONG process and we are slowly but surely getting there. I found the IHP program through a friend and was instantly hooked. With all the options available, Wellness Coaching has really spoken out to me and it's what I want to go into a Career with!
I've chosen to explore how Lifestyle Medicine, specifically Wellness Coaching, can aid in Addiction recovery.
Wellness Coaching was brought up in 2010 when Karen Lawson and Margaret Moore assembled a team of fourteen thought leaders and co-founders devoted to creating national standards + certifications of Health + Wellness coaches. These coaches partner with clients seeking lasting changes that will promote health and wellness. Coaches honor each client while ensuring all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental.

Why pick Addiction recovery?

Addiction Recovery has always been an interesting process to me. I grew up with a recovering alcoholic and just about every friend I had knew an addict. I never understood why life for them was so hard and challenging, when they themselves weren't the addicts, but I realized how being an addict really did affect so much more than just your being.
In Joe's presentation of Addiction, she mentioned that 21.6 million people need addiction treatment and only 2.3 million people received that treatment. Hearing that really got me thinking about ways to help raise that number of treatment and reduce the number of addicts.
I think it's important for recovering addicts to have a well rounded support system and be able to have the option to set positive goals and habits. Setting good goals, coping mechanisms and having a good support system could help aid in their recovery and help move them into a healthier lifestyle.

Recovery Paths To Wellness

In the article Recovery: The Many Paths of Wellness, it spoke about the Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC). This program embraces the idea that severe substance use disorders are most effectively addressed with a certain model. This chronic care model includes longer term, outpatient care, recovery housing, management checkups and recovery coaching. These treatment professionals act as a partner or work in a consultation role to work on each personalized goal, family support, strengths and community resources.
By having more access to recovery coaching, there is a hope that many more addicts seeking treatment will be able to receive that treatment and continue to seek support and stay on a healthy and sober path. Having a continued support would be that extra help that they may not find in family or friends. Resources may even become more available working with a recovery coach.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK424846/

Lifestyle Balance Model

Creating a balance when being an addict is a challenge in its own. Many people find it hard to hold a job, keep relationships healthy, as well as continue having a home. Many are forced out of homes due to their addiction or because of unemployment. Often times, they are more exposed to whatever their addiction is weather it be alcohol or drugs.
Having a Lifestyle imbalance (unemployment, relationship breakdowns, or homelessness) can increase the risk and exposure to their substance of choice to cope. When you have lifestyle balance (stable employment, relationships and accommodations) that strengthens a persons resilience to prevent or overcome substance abuse.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4326198/
