         <description><![CDATA[<div>gold and salt were one of Africa's most valuable commodities. western Sudan was rich with gold deposits that stimulated the flow of silk from china and spices from India. European kings also used them to make coins. salt was used to preserve food and was traded for gold.&nbsp; <br><br>5- one of the factors that led to the emergence of Ghana is that its capital kombi saleh, stood midway between africa's main sources of salt and gold mines. so, merchants had to pass through Ghana and pay taxes. its favorable location made Ghana's traders middle men. in addition, its rulers made money by taxing merchants and the gold was <br>controlled by the king ensuring its scarcity.<br><br>6- a pound of gold. Gold had more economical benefits such as stimulating the flow of silk from china, and spices from india; and European kings used it to make coins. on the other hand, salt was only used to preserve food. Salt was worth <strong>almost</strong> as much as gold and was used to be traded for gold which means its value is less than gold's.<br><br>7- islam impacted africa. mosques became common in north africa and its architecture was cleverly adapted. also, it brought a written language to north africa by spreading arabic. literacy increases and scholarships thrived. it also increased religious diversity  </div>]]></description>
