Barriers could be teachers not being clear, precise and deliberate in their instruction. On the student side, barriers can be a lack of confidence, motivation or full understanding that thinking, learning and writing is a process, not a one time or one step "thing." Teachers and students need to be willing to put the time and energy into the process for it the outcome(s) to be worthwhile.

Students are often empowered when teachers demonstrate a unified connection in teaching practices. For schoolwide commitment to metacognition through writing, if everyone is doing and requiring a similar strategy (like focus note-taking) it no longer becomes an isolated skill in just an AVID class, or ELA, or SS....it becomes a tool that students can see benefits from across the board making them more likely to adopt the strategy as their own, and possibly modify it as their mastery grows and changes according to the content/situation.

A big barrier is all the things that disrupt the thinking process. The flipgrid issues were frustrating because they kept you from sharing and finding a work around (Padlet) took time. Sometimes it is technology, but it can be any type of disruption that keeps us from being able to reflect and process while the learning is still fresh.

By committing schoolwide to use metacognitive approaches especially with writing, will help students feel empowered as they work to understand their own thought process. This refines their critical thinking and provide more thoughtful responses as their learning grows more effective.

Barriers, can be anything from teachers not being clear and concise as to what they want, or it could be that technology isn't always reliable. Barriers in education are quite frequent, we have to adapt and find new and innovative ways to get our message across and help our students. This can also pertain to our colleagues, maybe during PLC's the message is not being delivered the way it should. I feel like barriers are inevitable, one must find a way to make it work.

I also like the idea of goal setting for a writing assignment. We talk about goal setting all of the time with students but I never really thought about having them establish one prior to a writing assignment.
