I found this edit funny because most of the outfits are completely unrelated to the theme of the year, so the fact that Rhianna has been edited as an egg yolk adds to the irony that the met gala will just be made fun of and not taken seriously, as the celebrities who arrive don't even dress accordingly to the given theme

I chose this cartoon from the first lecture as my 'after class' activity because I found the shape of her dress funny. It links to modern body types, where it is fashionable to have a large bum and big chest. Body types being fashionable is another topic which I find interesting, because they are scrutinised more than the actual fashions on the body. But it depends on the culture. So perhaps this can be a type of Incongruity Theory in this sense, as well as knowing that women in the 18th century had to wear loads of layers underneath their dresses

"Cartoons have long been on standby both for the popularise and 'academic' dress historian because of the broad range of political, social and cultural comment they offer through clothing analysis in witty and easily accessible form. However, little in-depth exploration has yet been undertaken to reveal the significant cultural meanings accessible through looking at clothing in cartoons" pg2

"Cartoonists use observation of clothing both to inflict wounds on their target and to amuse their readers. Every nuance of posture, body shape and garment becomes grist to their social comment through their ability to catch or exaggerate the immediate, ephemeral moment. They are therefore useful as a gauge of period social reaction to dress rather than for their 'reliable' depiction of style" (pg2 - 3)

"Most cartoonists develop such favourite stock characters often through the use of clothing imagery and often with great popular success" (pg4)

"Oscar Lancaster both *admired and gently mocked* the heroine of his long running Daily Express cartoons" (pg4 / 8)

"Caricatures of fashion are, indeed, one of the most attractive kinds of imagery to survive the Georgian period, and on the face of it pose few problems of interpretation. They lack the obvious, complicated symbolism of political satires, although, as will be shown, their coded language expresses values that were fundamental to society of the day."

"The amateurs had an intimate knowledge of the styles of dress they pilloried, and were in many cases themselves 'people of fashion.' In other words, this is self-satire by the kinds of people the prints depicted" (pg3 / 15)

"Attitudes of fashion were confused and ambivalent. The comedy of the caricatures concealed an underlying anxiety, or, rather, anxiety gave them an edge and a kind of sanction. They were meant, ostensibly at least, to curb the follies of the frivolous, and to illustrate the sort of behaviour that right-minded people should avoid" (pg4/ 15)

"Whatever moral warnings lurked within the satires, their principal purpose was to entertain" (pg10/ 15)
Fashion exhibitions and entertainment

"A sense of connection between particular styles of clothes and the character and 'lifestyle' of those who wore them is less in evidence. The caricaturists presented a cast of stereotypes" (pg10/ 15)

"If the caricaturists could not fathom the social meaning of such cults, their impressions of how clothes were worn offer fascinating insights into the nature of fashionability" (14/ 15)

"Fashion, with all its unresolved mysteries of causation and agency, of motives of buying and motives for rejection and change, already exerted its powers of fascination, well before a great expansion of industrial manufacture, the growing cult named designers and the rise of mass media created the modern fashion industry" (pg14/ 15)

Incongruity theory? Because it's niche to certain people... ?

"Hedi Slimane, the creative director of Celine, invited Kramer to collaborate with the brand in 2019. The resulting collection of wallets, bags, jumpers and shoes is currently in stores. The artist is in joyous disbelief: “The fashion industry isn’t known for humour and self deprecation,” he says, gleefully. “Of course I’d heard of Celine before; the great irony of it as a brand is that they advertise everywhere. In New York they advertise on bus stops, which is hilarious because no one taking the bus is buying Celine. But it has this street cred, it has a reputation for being a sexy brand.”

https://elephant.art/isnt-it-ironic-david-kramer-brings-satire-to-high-fashion-celine-17032020/

I guess this links to the 'Defining Parody: A Sartorial Example' powerpoint slide from week 2. Where Ross Geller wears a 'Frankie Say Relax' t-shirt in the series Friends. Friends definitely has a sense of Relief Theory as well as Incongruity Theory because the humour will only make sense to those who watched the show/ grew up watching it.

Feminist Satire - looking deeper, through clothes/ makeup

Personally, I am a massive fan of anything feminist, or even misandrist, so I found these funny. In relation to fashion, the first image we could talk about superiority theory, as perhaps the women could be criticised for what they're wearing, especially since the caption says 'been there, done him' it infers that perhaps she has been with a lot of men. Men view women as objects, and her dress would probably be viewed as 'revealing' as she shows lots of skin.

The 'I'm married, but it's not serious' cartoon shows a woman who appears dominant in her stance and she looks like a professional/ business woman from the way she is dressed. Her hair is neat and she holds a cigarette and leans against the railing. She wears a pencil skirt and cardigan. The man is also in a suit but appears weaker and more submissive, especially from his facial expression
