Šiauliai - Lithuanian city

Hi everyone! We will tell you about Šiauliai (a Lithuanian city).

The city was first mentioned in written sources as Soule in Livonian Order chronicles describing the Battle of Sun. Thus the city's founding date is now considered to be 22 September 1236, the same date when the battle took place, not far from Šiauliai. At first, it developed as a defence post against the raids by the Teutonic and Livonian Orders. After the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, the raids stopped and Šiauliai started to develop as an agricultural settlement. In 1445, a wooden church was built. It was replaced in 1625 with the brick church which can be seen in the city center today.

Šiauliai was granted Magdeburg city rights in the 16th century when it also became an administrative centre of the area. However, in the 16th to 18th centuries the city was devastated by The Deluge and epidemics of the Bubonic plague.

Former Šiauliai Jewish school
The credit for the city's rebirth goes to Antoni Tyzenhaus (1733–1785) who after a violent revolt of peasants of the Crown properties in Northern Lithuania started the radical economic and urban reforms. He decided to rebuild the city according to the Classicism ideas: at first houses were built randomly in a radial shape, but Tyzenhaus decided to build the city in an orderly rectangular grid. Šiauliai grew to become a well-developed city, with several prominent brick buildings.[citation needed] In 1791 Stanisław August Poniatowski, king of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, confirmed once again that Šiauliai's city rights and granted it a coat of arms which depicted a bear, the symbol of Samogitia, the Eye of Providence, and a red bull, the symbol of the Poniatowski family. The modern coat of arms has been modelled after this version.

In addition to the cathedral, something very popular in Murcia are the paparajotes, which are made with lemon tree leaves covered with a flour and egg-baes dough, which are fried and sprinkled with sugar on top. They are delicious. There’s also marineras, which are stretched bread with a Russian salad and an anchovy on top. Then there’s the science and water museum, which is an interactive museum specialized in water, which provides resources like planetariums or exhibitions to disseminate scientific culture in a more fun and participatory way. Finally we have the Mar Menor, it is located on the coast of the Murcia region. It has salty water and is the largest lagoon in Spain.

Today I'm going to write about Murcia, a city in Spain where we live. What I like most about this place is that it has lots of beautiful beaches. Every week I go with my family to the city centre to go shopping. Since Alcantarilla is a little city inside murcia there aren’t many shops.

Here it is typical in bars to eat “marineras” before eating as a snack. Other food very famous from murcia is the omelet with potatoes and also the paella, that is rice with chicken red pepper green pepper tomato and sometimes with fish. Our football and basketball players are very very nice.

In Christmas the city hall put a very big lighty Christmas tree in the city centre. Everybody eats roasted chestnuts and drinks hot chocolate. Instead of here it's sunny every time.

Lots of people know when someone lives in Murcia because we talk without the letter s and many times we shorten words like “everything”. We also use “acho”, this word is only used in Murcia and Extremadura (other cities in Spain).

We have lots of parties like “El entierro de la Sardina” “ El bando de la huerta” etc.

And that’s a little bit about Murcia, our hometown. When are you going to visit us? We’re waiting for you!

                                                              Edurne Arcas Pujante

There is a bad zone in Murcia the Mar Menor this Zone is affected by the contamination of the water, and it smells very bad. Apart from that, there are some of the best beaches in Spain. In Bullas and in Mazarron there are big jumps to the water, in Bullas there's in a river and in Mazarron there’s in the sea.

Murcia is a little autonomous community in Spain. It is situated in the south of Spain and it’s very popular because of its good temperature.

Murcia has got a lot of history and monuments, like the Minor Sea. The Minor Sea is a very big lagoon near the Mediterranean Sea, it is a monument because it forms a piece of land which divides the lagoon and the Sea, we call this piece of land “La Manga”. Other monuments here are the cathedral situated in the centre of the city or the Roman theatre in Cartagena (a city in Murcia).

But Murcia not only has important monuments, it also has many fun festivities with a lot of history. In the centre of the city there are important festivities like “The side of the orchard”, “The burial of the sardine” and “Moors and Christians”. In other cities, there are other festivities like “Carthaginians and Romans” (in Cartagena) or “The May festivities” (in Alcantarilla).

Finally, I will add that the food here is also very good, specially the vegetables and fruits of “La huerta de Murcia”. Here, there are typical dishes as well. Some examples are the zarangollo, the murcian salad or the meatloaf.

Now that you know all this from Murcia, ¿are you going to visit us?

Victoria López Hernández
