The Causes of the French Revolution

Around the time of 1700 - 1789, that is when the French Revolution started forming and happened. Many things lead up to this historical period but here are a few: Funding the American Revolution, Famine, Young monarchy, Unbalanced Social Structure, Influence of Enlightenment thinkers, and English and American Resolutions. Funding the American Revolution fused the French Revolution because they weren't using the money from the taxes accordingly. Famine played a big part in this because the population grew and the weather was too cold to grow crops also causing prices to go up. Young monarchy

Meeting of the Estates General

The Meeting of the was held at Palace of Versailles. There was a representative from each estate to go to the meeting. The reason they held this meeting is because King Louis XVI gave all of the country tax money. The two other estates (clergy and nobles) made the king go to this meeting to approve on this new tax law. This meeting was held on May 5th, 1789. A occurring issue was that they would only pick the peasants. There were 1,200 representatives in total. The first Estate had 300, 300 for the second Estate, and 600 for the third Estate.

Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes, planned The National Assembly. This occurred on June 17. The third estate did this to put new law and rules in place. June 20, 1789, The Third Estate tried to attend the meeting but the room was locked and they couldn't enter, until they busted in. They refused to leave unless there was a new constitution in place. They ended up staying there for two days. In the end, the Nobles and the Clergy became a part of the Third Estate. King Louis sent in his army of Swiss guards to the Versailles.

Storming of The Bastille

Rumors spread that King Louis XVI used mercenaries to terminate the National Assembly, while others thought troops were getting ready to attack the French people. Citizens got weapons trained in self-defense, worried if their country was under attack. On July 14, 1789, a mob got gunpowder and other weapons, and stormed the Bastille. The crowd threw out the guards and took control over the prison, and killed the commander and his men. July 14 has been commemorated as Bastille Day.

French Republic and the Declaration of the rights of man

August 4, 1789, many nobles gave speeches showing they stand for liberty and equality. Although, their support was compelled by fear. The three Estates—clergy, nobility, and commoners— united together to destroy the Old Regime and announced everyone equal. They dismantled the social structure overnight. Three weeks later, the National Assembly drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. In it they stated all men are equal and also promised equal justice, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech.

Trial of the King and Queen

The Flight to Varennes happened in June of 1791. King Louis XVI and his relatives tried to flee to the Austrian Netherlands but were found and made return to France. After this happened almost everyone in France grew a strong hatred toward King Louis. December of 1792, the National Convention made him go on trial for his disloyalty for the country and attempted to escape. He was had 33 charges of treason and it was referred to as "Citizen Louis Capet." The majority believed he guilty and he was executed. On January 21, 1793, Louis XVI was guillotined

Reign of Terror

The Jacobins were members of a political party known as the Jacobin club. Maximilien Robespierre was the head and he started off as good until an excessive amount of people were killed. The Jacobins were involved in government changes. Anyone who deliberately went against the laws would be killed on a guillotine. This part in time was called the Reign of terror because, the government hurt anyone that was a threat or enemy. This caused people copious amounts of fear and terror.

Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte

July 1794, worried about their safety, many people in convention turned against Robespierre. He was arrested and killed on a guillotine on July 28, 1794, ending the awful times of the Reign of Terror. After his death, the National Convention made a new government system, known as the First French Republic. In this time of new beginnings, Napoleon Bonaparte was elected as one of the new directors of the government, and eventually came the "Napoleonic Era."
