Society views their friendship as "incorrect", they come from two different worlds and don't fit into each other's lives. Society tell them "to stay within the confines of our religion" meaning this one factor in both of the girls' lives serves as a border of separation between the two of them. This however is contradictory to the truth that they "are far more similar than our religions would like us to believe". Their society focuses on dwelling on the history of their pasts rather than moving forward. The Jewish girl talks about this when she says "this world would rather chew up and spit out our history than help these two girls", the girls referring to the Palestinian and the Israeli.

society views their religions in a way that is stereotypical. This drives the society to assume that Muslims and jews are unequal to Americans. An example is the line, when the girl says "a penny falls, I'm assumed to be the one to pick it up? Stealing from every man's pocket," This implicates that they are inferior to Americans and that they are low level to pick up the trash. Another example is "the airport security check line moves forward, I'm the one who's pulled aside and patted down?" This shows that Americans still discriminate against other religions like muslims as they assume that they are a threat. Prejudice and discrimination are the main reasons.
