He was diagnosed at the age of five. Now Billy did not have any language delays or any severe symptoms that stood out to my husband and I. Billy is a bright and energetic boy who has quirks that makes him unique. It wasn't until he turned five when we really began to notice these quirks quickly advancing to something else. He had a picky diet that consisted of only cheese and crackers and he refused to eat meat because he was afraid to hurt animals. He had a few delayed motor development skills. He had trouble understanding why certain kids reacted the way they did when he interacted with them. We were told by his teachers that we should try to get him tested. And so we did. Billy is now 10 years old and currently attends speech language pathology sessions at school where the speech therapist works on pragmatics and social skills.  We also have a behavioral interventionist come to our home 3 times a week who works with Billy on social activities and regulating his energy. To outsiders, Billy is a high functioning kid currently learning how to read social emotions and gets frustrated when he doesn't understand.  But to my husband and I, Billy is still our unique, quirky child. ]]> 2017-05-15 04:59:32 UTC https://padlet.com/ang3lb4by529/ASD/wish/171745831 ang3lb4by529 https://padlet.com/ang3lb4by529/ASD/wish/171747248 My husband and I realize the challenges that a child with AS has and will develop, but we also always remind ourselves of the strengths that Billy has shown and will continue to show  as he develops. 
Some challenges include:

• ^{Sensory regulation (understanding where body is in space, responding appropriately to multiple sensations, motor planning, auditory, visual, or intellectual processing difficulties in  social settings)} 
• ^{Recognizing emotions within themselves/in others (matching emotional responses to people, activities, and settings)}
• ^{Regulation of attention impulses (controlling flight or fight response when anxious, analyzing relevant vs. irrelevant information, time consuming personal interests resulting in interference of completion of everyday tasks)}
• ^{Problem solving(time management/ prioritizing/organizing thoughts)}
• ^{Chronic Fatigue}

Here are some strategies I have found useful, as well as his past and current teachers:

• decreasing the chances of anxiety (creating a safe place by providing a quiet corner or a reading corner)
• developing group and team building activities that will allow all students in the classroom to work together to accomplish a group goal
• allowing time to work on their own individual projects that will also help to ease anxiety and calm stress
• providing visual aids with organization and scheduling (time chart of at what time activities will occur)
• providing prompts when transitioning in and out of activities and classrooms
