It was more mild than most however because england did not have large plantations for slave labor and the demand was low. Also indentured slaves was a common practice in new england colonies. This just means that people who needed to pay off debt could willingly perform slave-like labor to pay. The punishments were often less cruel and slaves were allowed to learn trades and more.
