Even though it was not as bad as the southern colonies, the new england colonies still practiced slavery. It was more mild than most however because england did not have large plantations for slave labor and the demand was low. Also indentured slaves was a common practice in new england colonies. This just means that people who needed to pay off debt could willingly perform slave-like labor to pay. The punishments were often less cruel and slaves were allowed to learn trades and more.
