Additionally, the California Sustainable Development Fellowship Award supports outstanding MDP candidates who are California residents at the time of application. MDP candidates must demonstrate financial need, have overcome barriers to access higher education, and show promise for achievement and future leadership in development practice domestically or internationally.

A new media certification provides enhanced skills in analyzing and/or designing future media with an awareness of historical, social, and cultural perspectives that might not be visible from a single discipline. Emphasizing a critical understanding of the nature and implications of new media, our students draw on theories and methodologies from the arts, the humanities and social sciences, and science and engineering, to innovate while questioning the impact of new media on the human experience. 

Our students are eligible for a host of opportunities through the Center, including conference and summer research grants, our prestigious Lyman and Eugene Jarvis fellowships, our AAPI Media Creatives fellowship, research support, teaching positions, and unique experiences through our working groups and the world-class speakers we bring to campus.

Why Environmental Health + Data Science? 

This unique program prepares students to tackle one of today's most pressing challenges: understanding how environmental exposures impact human health. In this hands-on Challenge Lab, students will work in interdisciplinary teams to explore real environmental challenges, identify market opportunities, interview stakeholders, test ideas, and develop climate-positive ventures. Projects may address areas such as renewable energy, water, pollution, waste reduction, sustainable products, and other emerging climate solutions.

The Earth’s crust hosts invaluable resources such as fuels, geothermal energy and critical minerals. This course will review these resources, describe multidisciplinary geoscience and geoengineering concepts for locating and utilizing them, introduce the fascinating challenges for doing so effectively, and illustrate modern approaches from the molecular to reservoir scale.

What is the DeCal about?

Building on many of the conversations we’ve had through our cooking workshop, we’ll explore topics including:

• South Asian dietary patterns and healthy adaptations to traditional foods

• Diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease

• Glycemic index, sodium, added sugars, and understanding nutrition labels

• Family dynamics and cultural food traditions

• Mindful eating and our relationships with food

• How culture, socioeconomic factors, and healthcare inequities shape health outcomes
