The discussions to construct the first intercolonial links in the 1856 between Australian states, thanks to Samuel McGowan and Charles Todd, greatly developed and increased communications within colonial Australia. Victoria’s original telegraph line of 1854 by McGowan had expanded by the late 1850’s where the intercolonial telegraph network had linked Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

As the colonial states of Australia swiftly became connected through telegraph it was an early example of genuine federal and national outlook. The success opened confidence and optimism for external communication, particularly linking to London. Furthermore, the interconnectedness of the states helped to stimulate federation talks.

The formation of Germany in 1871 was ruthlessly unified by the driving figure of Otto Von Bismarck as he waged war and united some 39 states that existed from 1815. The powerful states of the Confederation, Prussia and Austria fought for leadership, with Bismarck and Prussia prevailing.

Bismarck won definitive wars through the 1860’s on Austria, Denmark and France. Bismarck politicalised antagonization of the French into a war, mobilised other states to Prussia’s cause to a common purpose of pride and defence. Nationalism won and the German empire was formed through Bismarck, paving way to a unified country and introduction of meaningful change within European region.

As towns, cities and nations began the great link of railways, the regulation of time was necessary to create accurate long-distance timetables. Previously, towns had their times set accounted to the position of the sun at their location. Therefore, the standardisation of time was created.

In the United Kingdom it was known as the Greenwich Mean Time and in the United States, Standard Railway Time. These standardised forms of time eventually led to the creation of time zones, creating a geographical connectiveness through time.
