Application of Water in Medical Field

Water plays an important role in the Health care field. From washing surgical tools and equipment to creating a soothing environment for patients to have hydrotherapy, water is essential to the effectiveness of the health industry. However, moist environments and liquid solutions can create a favourable setting for the growth of many bacterial and protozoal microbes. waterborne diseases can be spread through:
1. Direct contact(eg, hydrotherapy)
2. Ingestion of water (eg, Drinking water)
3. Indirect-contact (Medical/dental tool/equipment)
4. Inhalation of aerosols from water sources
5. Aspiration of water
6. Blood contact (eg, hemodialysis)
Due to weakened immune systems of many patients, the water used in health care settings mustn't be contaminated. Hydrotherapy involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating certain medical conditions.
HYDROTHERAPY: Hydrotherapy equipment includes pools, whirlpools, whirlpool spas, hot tubs, and physiotherapy tanks. Patients with medical conditions, such as burns, septic ulcers, lesions, amputations, and arthritis, can benefit from the effects of sitting in warm water. For the health and safety of patients, it is vital to ensure that the water that is used in hydrotherapy is safe and clean. Many of these patients have compromised immune systems due to current infections, and are highly susceptible to new infections from contaminated water in hydrotherapy pools. Potential routes of infection caused by contaminated water include accidental ingestion of the water, breathing sprays and aerosols from the water, and allowing wounds to come in direct contact with the water. Infection control for hydrotherapy tanks, pools, or birthing tanks presents unique challenges because naturally-occurring microbes, that may not be dangerous for a healthy individual, are always present in the water during treatments. The use of hydrotherapy for patients with wounds, burns, or other types of non-intact skin conditions should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Health-care providers should always consider the availability of alternative aseptic techniques for wound management, as well as a risk-benefit analysis of using traditional hydrotherapy. If hydrotherapy is used, facilities should maintain strict cleaning and disinfection practices by the manufacturer’s instructions
HEMODIALYSIS: During an average week of hemodialysis, a patient can be exposed to 300-600 litres of water, providing multiple opportunities for potential patient exposure to waterborne pathogens. Adverse patient outcomes including outbreaks associated with water exposure in dialysis settings have resulted from patient exposure to water via a variety of pathways; including the improper formulation of dialysate with water containing high levels of chemical or biological contaminants, contamination of injectable medications with tap water, and reprocessing of dialyzers with contaminated water. For the health and safety of hemodialysis patients, it is vital to ensure the water used to perform dialysis is safe and clean.
MEDICAL AND DENTAL EQUIPMENT: Certain pieces of medical and dental equipment can be directly connected to main water systems, including the automated endoscope reprocessor (AER) and certain dental units that are connected to water lines. It is highly important that these pieces of equipment use uncontaminated water during medical procedures. Certain microbes from water can contaminate medical equipment, causing nosocomial (hospital-related) infection and outbreaks of infection.
, Drinking enough water can help prevent certain medical conditions trusted source. Producing hot steam mostly to rotate the generators and then eventually converting into POWER ! Water then is used to cool the steam and turn it back into water ... Hence Nuclear power plants cannot function without water & has a significant role to play in that industry , no need to argue how efficient that energy is & one of the pros is there's no contamination , so that's a good part of it !

After such treatment if we are left with minute particles in it, that can be separated by many ultra-filtration methods.

Removal of oily and greasy substances: Industries which removes greasy and oil globules by water ways isn't done directly. The water has to go through process before releasing it to nature.
Industries have various separators which separtes water from emulsified solutions.

Why is it necessary to do such treatments?
We humans always have behaved carelessly towards nature. When water used to release without process, it resulted into blockage of water bodies, death roads for marine lives and severe threat to marine plants.
So government had to do something to save marine life. Many people worked a lot and put many efforts and came up with great ideas.

Water has always been a vital part of agriculture. Just like humans, crops need water to survive and grow. There are three areas of water use in agriculture: growing of crops ,supplying drinking water to livestock, cleaning farm building and animals the amount of each category varies according to the type of farm
Nearly 60 percent of the worlds fresh water that is used by humans in use of irrigation. Of this water applied to crop fields, only half returns to surface water or ground water sources.

We all know that if you trace the power lines far enough, you’ll eventually find a coal, gas, or nuclear plant, or perhaps a solar panel or wind turbine. But not everyone understands the relationship between electricity and water, which is used in various ways throughout the power sector. Understanding that relationship can help decision makers make smarter, more-informed decisions that produce better outcomes for consumers and the environment.Water is involved at many points in the process of producing electricity:Electricity Generation Fuel Extraction and Production Fuel Refining and Processing Fuel Transportation:Emissions Control Power plants using other cooling systems, known as recirculating or closed-loop systems, withdraw only a fraction of the amount that once-through systems do, but consume most or all of it. Power plant water consumption becomes a large problem in water constrained regions where competition among users is high.

Without water many companies and the products they provide would fail to exist. Water use is a fundamental commodity for nearly every step of the manufacturing and production processes around the world.Whether it's deionised water for electronics and pharmaceutical sectors, or softened water for boiler feed applications, water is necessary and comes embedded in the footprint of virtually item created on the planet. And to put it into perspective: industry accounts for around 40% of total water abstractions. Yet, at the same time, many global companies have manufacturing facilities operating in water scarce parts of the world, with over two thirds of companies now reporting exposure to water risks.

INDUSTRIAL USES OF WATER:
1)Ultrapure water use in semiconductor manufacturing

Water is an essential component for the manufacturing of semiconductors and chips which are used everyday in computers, cell phones and automobiles. Ultrapure water is used throughout the process, including to remove impurities from silicon wafers. For example, a single 8” wafer, which is the foundation for approximately 100 chips, may require up to 2,000 gallons of UPW.

2)Cooling water

Cooling systems are used to remove heat from processes or equipment. Heat removed from one medium is transferred to another medium, or process fluid, which most often is water. According to the SUEZ Water Technologies Handbook, the driving force for the transfer of heat is the difference in temperature between the two media, which in most cooling systems, is in the range of 10-200 degrees F.

3)Water use in pulp & paper mills

Despite digitalisation prompting a move away from printed products, the pulp and paper sector remains one of the largest users of industrial process water in the US and the second largest in Europe. Water is intricately associated with 85% of all the three stages of paper production namely, pulp making, pulp processing, and paper/paper board manufacturing, and their associated activities of cooking, bleaching, and washing.

After the steam is used to turn the turbines , it is condensed back to water by cooling it. The condensed water is then routed back to the boiler , where the cycle begins again.
