He helped write the "Southern Manifesto" outlining arguments against the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education ruling. He made Senate history for the longest individual filibuster, 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Thurmond opposed the law, that banned discriminatory voting laws such as poll taxes and literacy tests, which allowed many blacks could  vote.

She took an active role in demanding voting rights for African Americans.
