Ms. Strayed is the woman behind the advice column "Dear Sugar."  he typically told long and involved stories about her personal experience as it related to the question being asked.  In doing so she didn't just give advice but she gave of herself in a way that created something much richer than a simple piece of suggestion.  I found the power of her honesty undeniable.

Ms. Gay is a social critic and one of my favorite writers. She demonstrated to me how to weave together two seemingly dissimilar topics, e.g., cooking greens and insecurity in a way that made both topics more accessible. I want to write like her.
