Benefit: clear and consistent expectations applied universally
Drawback: in some cases students become so extrinsically motivated that they seek the reward over the actually learning. Intrinsic motivation suffers at the hand of reward systems.

This is so totally true when working on developing behavioural affordance in a classroom. Mixed messages can be very easily given when you punish the whole group. It can also cause that negative response from those who do well in the behavioural department and will in some ways provide them with the opportunity to act out as well. If they are all going to face the wrath, why behave.

We practice, play games a lot through the early part of the year to reinforce it. If needed it is a great option to have and know it will work.

The skilled use of behaviorist strategies has been shown to support school-wide and classroom management issues (PBIS) resulting in a learning community where meaning making is a priority for all students. Could the behavior interventions inhibit or discourage innovation? I think that the removal of inappropriate learning behaviors would make space for innovation to occur but who is to say that the innovation could have been born from the behavior we are intervening with?
(Ken)
