To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

To Kill A Mockingbird is a good example of how empathy and tolerance is important to make people patient and selfless. This sets up the example of how people develop relationships. Near the end of Part 1, Jem and Scout come across this old lady named Mrs. Dubose. She says the following about Atticus; “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but on in the courthouse lawing for n******!” (Lee 117). Mrs. Dubose is very angry about Atticus defending a black man in court, and calls him a “n*****-lover”. Scout, later on, tells Atticus about Mrs. Dubose and he says, “... don’t let [her] get you down. She has enough troubles of her own” (Lee 124). Atticus showed empathy towards Mrs. Dubose by understanding what she was going through, which was trying to combat her morphine addiction, and tolerated all the bad names she’s called him. Towards the very beginning of the book, Scout complains to Atticus about how she doesn't want to go to school, and asks him if she can stay at home. Atticus replies by saying “You can’t do that Scout…to school you must go” (Lee 33). She still doesn’t want to go, and Atticus understands how she feels and the both of them come to an agreement. He says “If you’ll concede the necessity of going to school, we’ll go on reading every night just as we always have” (Lee 35). This quote shows that Atticus tolerates Scout’s pleas to let her stop going to school. He is empathetic in this situation because he understands Scout’s point of view and makes a deal with her. Atticus is being selfless. He’s selfless because he realizes in order to be tolerant, he needs to be patient. He also realizes that in order to develop relationships, he needs to be patient and unselfish; especially to the ones he wants to help.

Spiderman: No Way Home by Jon Watts

In Spiderman: No Way Home, Peter shows empathy and tolerance by being patient with the people that need help and puts himself in harm's way to help them. He also develops relationships with everyone he helps along the way. One example of this is, towards the middle of the movie, Peter is trying to cure all the supervillains. He decides to cure Doc Ock first. Doc Ock is against his cure, and was saying things like “If this goes wrong I’ll hurt you”. Peter ignores this and cures Doc Ock, and he develops a positive relationship with him (Watts 1:06:47). Another example of this is, towards the end of the movie, when the spidermen cure all the villains after the fight at the Statue of Liberty. The fight to get them cured took a lot of patience, and the spidermen were almost injured during the fight (Watts 1:52:33). After curing the villains, the spidermen talk to the villains from their universe and develop positive relationships with them. They wouldn’t have been able to do this without their patience and unselfishness. Peter risks everything to give all these villains a second chance in their universe, and he loses everything he has because of this. Peter wasn't thinking of himself when he did all of this for the villains, and was patient with them throughout the whole journey. With his empathy, selflessness, tolerance, and patience, Peter developed a good relationship with all the villains and other spidermen.

In The Owl House, the main character Luz, tries to develop a better relationship with another character, Amity, by being empathetic and tolerant of all the mean things Amity says. Luz is selfless by putting others first, and is patient while trying to develop a good relationship with Amity. In episode 5 of the show, Luz and Amity talk to each other after having a witches’ duel. They talk about the way that Luz can cast magic differently, and Luz attempts to be nice to Amity but she’s just being cold and dry. (Terrace 19:25) Amity tells Luz that she’ll never be a true witch, and leaves. Luz tolerated Amity’s rude comment, and doesn’t think too much about it. In episode 7, Amity and Luz get trapped in a library. While Luz is in the library, she accidentally reads Amity’s diary, which makes Amity really mad (Terrace 14:39). Luz wanted to make up for it, so she gave the next book in the Azura series to Amity (Terrace 19:46). Amity apologizes to Luz for being a bully, and starts to warm up to her (Terrace 19:56). All the patience and selflessness that Luz had while trying to be friends with Amity, paid off. Towards the end of season 1, the both of them become really good friends. No matter how rude Amity was to Luz, Luz tolerated it and understood what Amity was going through. She put Amity first, as well as the many other people that she has helped.
