Victoria. Spain. We are taking part in a project called eScholarium with the students of 5º and 6º of Primary. They use the school devices in the school, but they use their own devices at home. Pupils are really motivated with this way of learning. But we have many problems with the digital books, because they do not offer what we want to teach. It is a good idea we make the digital books, but we have not time to perform this.

Our school policy is not allowed of using the smart phones in the school at all. We discussed a lot about these decision. The reasons are many. The benefits of using this technology in the classroom are minor that profits according of many studies did in EU and US. A lot of schools are reducing or even banning the use phones because of negative impact to their results in knowledge. Recite: ''The effect of banning mobile phones from school premises adds up to the equivalent of an extra week’s schooling over a pupil’s academic year, according to research by Louis-Philippe Beland and Richard Murphy, published by the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics.'“Ill Communication: The Impact of Mobile Phones on Student Performance” found that after schools banned mobile phones, the test scores of students aged 16 improved by 6.4%. The economists reckon that this is the “equivalent of adding five days to the school year”. Very interesting reading. it is also an aspect of inequality. Not everyone can afford the smartphone.

Great presentation from Guillermo and Sergio. Great ideas about implementing a BYOD system. I have done so for a very small number of older(16 to 18YO) students. Implement it using school wifi system which is filtered as in students can not access inappropriate material. I also use an apple TV on occasion facilitating students using airport. Classroom management is key to this process. Educating students as to the potential impact of misuse and using real world examples. Important to get buy in from all stakeholders, especially management and parents.
Because we dont have an individual network account for each student, we use a generic account for all (a really bad idea) we dont have the students registered in active directory. The physical infrastructure is important but also consider the implementation before starting. By using the school network for students, regardless of the device they use we guarantee filtering (Access to appropriate sites only) Some BYOD setups are based on students using their own Internet Service ir phone data which is wide open and needs strong classroom management.

thanks to the National planning called PNSD teachers and schools are required to introduce BYOD into school praxis. I have been experimenting BYOD in the last years during my eTwinning Projects. I think that the main challenge, beside technical aspects , is the change of mindsets as explained in the video above. I have experienced how students can be really motivated in using BYOB performing activities related to PBL. If students understand the benefits connected with PBL and BYOD they accept the necessary rules because they really enjoy this change of methodology in their school routine

Because it is like its said in the video necessary that students learn how to use the devices correct in all relations (rights, possibilities etc) So actually in our school we are planning to set up an WiFi for the students werde thy can login with an personal account. But that was few years ago, and now they are becoming outdated, so we have to preview how we are going to do next years, and a BYOD project is an interesting possibility.
I find the challenges very well defined in the video. Thank you for sharing your work. The main problems are connectivity, diversity of devices, good use, privacy and control by teachers, and what to do with students without device, or if they forget it, or if they don't bring all the necessary complements to use it.
I didn't understand very well the ticket system explained by the video. Is it a characteristic of software of the AP's? Really, now this is our main challenge, when the 30 netbooks of a class ask to connect to the AP, there are always problems with WIFI, and 3 or 4 are out of connection. We can't imagine how it would be with all the mobile devices of our students connected at the same time.

Lots of compliments for this video, it's very clear and exhaustive! I can run a BYOD activity in my sschool, because I strongly believe that if you educate students to the correct use of a mobile, it is possible to make them use in class as well. My Principal agrees, but I find opposition in my colleagues, beause they believe that the right thing to do is to tell them to put their mobile in the rucksack and don't use it. I'm convinced that if students are allowed to use their mobile we can help them to make a sensible use of it.
I agree with what Guillermo and Sergio say about rules to respect. These are fundamental.

However if a day does arise we need to have a clear policy in order which needs to be signed by all children and parents. The biggest problem could arise at break times. Devices need to be locked away during times of recess otherwise problems arise.

BYOD is not a common practice in our schools, first of all because WLAN is also restricted.
The two schools with BYOD are one vocational and one Secondary school. In the Vocational school the students use their smartphones only when instructed by the teacher and to carry Internet research. In the Secondary school they have a structured BYOD Concept and manage the devices and access rights in the school via a Mobile Device Management System and WLAN-Controller for the WAPs.
I agree that the student commitmment to respect the BYOD rules is determinant for the success of such initiative.
One problem is always the inequity issues that arise between students who have/not have smartphones and also between the different models/capacities from the devices. A highly heteregenous mobile landscape is very difficult to manage.

I teach at Primary School, where students are very young. Some of them have got devices. I plan BYOD learning activities everyday to motivate my students to learning and to change my teaching practice; if I need more devices I ask my colleagues theirs so that I can integrate students' devices with them and I can have enough devices to work with. I use them to play interactive quizzes such as kahoot, mentimeter quizzes, to work on Edmodo, to look up words in the English dictionaries, to watch videos , to make pictures. We are having an Erasmus Project about inclusion and we have to make a documentary: students are using their devices to make one-minute films. I find devices really important and necessary if we teachers want to motivate students. Policy in my school about this topic is not so strict, I mean the headteacher forbids the use of smart phones if they are not used for educational purposes. I am an eTwinning Ambassador and students are involved in a project.

I have used Kahoot and Quizalize, QR code reader, etc. It is amazing how different apps increase pupils’ motivation and participation. When using BYOD of course, educators must be aware not just of the benefits but as well of the challenges as mentioned in the video. Misuse, privacy issues, control, security, economical differences etc. It is essential educators to emphasize the dangers and talk with ss how to overcome them and naturally make rules that have to be obeyed when using BYOD.

In the teacher training the BYOD model is used. Each teacher brings their device and uses it during courses. One of the problems is the lack of potential of the device, that is solved by lending our Ipad. Another problem is the diversity of devices for this you have to think of different apps that can be used both in Android and iOs. We use the BYOD model to create new audiovisual material from them or to intervene in quizzes and questionnaires to introduce the classes or in the evaluation.

The BYOD is prohibited for students in Greece. In my school there is the appropriate infrastructure to run BYOD projects. The last school year I begun a BYOD project for the lesson of the programming of the mobile devices. I got the permission from my school director, and I use the WiFi of the Computer Lab only during the lesson hours. After that I turn off the Access Point for security reasons. I don’t get a written permission from the parents, but I believe that is a good practice and I will follow it. The teachers use their own mobile devices but not in the educational process because they don’t have the sufficient knowledge. Moreover, the teachers connect to a different wireless LAN than students.

We have been working with the BYOD system for two years. Having pondered the pros and cons for some time of this system or that the school put the devices, we finally decided to opt for the first one.

Obviously this system is cheaper for school. You don´t have to spend money on buying any devices. You don´t have to waste time or spend money on the maintenance of the devices.

But there are others problems we have encountered with BYOD.

For example: Security. At first they were connected with a password that was placed on their device. But it´s very easy for students to guess the network password. There are a lot of programs they can use for it. So now we are considering the possibility of connecting students with an username and a password.

One of the advantages of BYOD is being able to work with digital books instead of with paper books.

So we reduce the weight of the school bags that students take to school

This video was just the right thing for me now. And one of the reasons of why I signed me for this Course. We are just starting to adopt BYOD for students in my school. We have been thinking about and dealing with all the things Guillermo is talking about in his video. The school administration decided to allow students from 5th-7th grade to acess the BYOD or they can have their parents apply for acess. But before we agree to parents/students application we have been working on rules concernig uses of the devices in the school and in the classroom. We have also been thinking about how to react if the rules are broken. I think it is also important to send good information to parents before BYOD is allowed and have them on board regarding usages of the devices. But I think there will alway be some stundent who can not play by the rules and that may not be in the way all who can and all the good things teachnology and good use can bring to us.
We have been using BYOD With student who have had some learning difficulties f.x. dyslexia, writing diffuculties or just lack of interest for school work. It helped them a lot. We use PDF workbooks both in Google Drive with Kami and also Foxit reader. We use Google Drive, Dropbox for books and worksheets for student who are always forgetting their projects at school or home. That way students, parents, teachers and teacher assistants can all work to gether. We have used the artificial intelligence of Google f.x to help both to write in Icelandic and for writing in English and Danish for students who can speak and understand but not write. I am hoping for a simple solutions for ipad og read written text in Iceland. But the size of my country is not workin in my favor.

The BYOD model could really make sense into the future once the pitfalls can be identified. As the video showed they have more experience with this in the US. I had a BYOD day in my last school. Over 50% (14) of the students participated and I managed to connect all but 1 to a temporary WiFi connection I had added for the day. We collaborated in adding to a Padlet and played some online games. The children who did not bring devices or theirs did not connect used school equipment. So all in all it was a success with not much overhead for the teacher.

I tried, with the support of my head teacher, to use the BYOD methodology , this year for first time,in my classes as an experiment to extend later .to the whole school.
First I asked the parent permission (my pupils are youger then 16 years old) to use their mail address and treir device, then I defined the rules to respect by students, finally after these Crhristmas holidays we will test this methodology.
Problems? There are a lot!

First we haven't a free connection for students and teachers so each one will use his own provider;

second the economical difference among students: most of them have smartphone and a personal connection,  but some of them no;

third the students need to recharge their devices and in our classrooms we have not enough sockets;

last but not least, a lot of colleagues have skepticism on pedagogical use of ICT and even more have fear that the control of the use of a personal devices is more difficult than to controll PCs in the lab.

To ensure the regulated use of device, the students as soon as arrive at school place their phone in a big box on desk and take them only when they must use for the project.
After all our school has no resource to buy device or to set up computer lab, at the moment we have only one lab with insufficient devices for the student of a single class.

In our school the use of (smart)phone is forbidden, so it has become the alternative world of students. They have a huge manual skill, in the use of the technology to communicate among them and to cover every fied of their spare time (music, sport, entertainement,...). Premised that, I'm strongly convinced on the use of their own devices.
Firstly for the familiarity by which they use the device. Secondly, they pay more attention for handling their property. Thirdly in this way school don't need to spend money for devices not full time used and suffering of rapid obsolescence. Lastly I hope that in this way they change the cultural approach to the device from "easy toy" to "essential tool" for their future life.
Negative points are a lot :

not every family is connected,

the most of students have expensive smartphones but not everybody,

for a more confortable study I think it needs at least a 8-10 inch display (i.e. tablets can substitute paper)

Waiting for uniform and clear rules to take for the whole institute, at the moment I let them use smartphones only when we make a KAHOOT at the end of an argument.

At the moment I havn't done activity with their device, but only a project with tablet and computer for the use of Tweeter to learn literature. Thanks for the good ideas.

It's true that in Europe devices are forbidden in schools but lately school is changing its regulation and teachers who ask for using devices for didactical reasons can guide and train students to use them in the classrooms.
I actually use BYOD in my school. We have some computers, laptops, some tablets and wifi. But the main reason is that students can use their own connection to do activities and still the problem is wifi networking.
Another important reason is that I want to teach my students that devices are not only toys to play or chat but they are a resource they always have with them at school as well as at home.
