I feel that as a teacher it is extremely helpful to have guidelines to refer to as we strive to meet our professional development goals. Having the opportunity to review and reflect upon the UMUC Department of Education Professional Disposition Policy, I realized how I had experienced situations where these guidelines were applicable.

After reading and reviewing the professional disposition polices, the ninth policy under “Relationship with the University Community, the School community and the Profession” brought to mind a scenario I had recently experienced at work. This policy stresses the importance of demonstrating professional responsibility at the work place. The section which I found especially applicable states the importance of “Exercising sound professional judgment and dependability” (UMUC Department of Education Professional Dispositions Policy, 2014). Recently, I had noticed that one of my newcomer students had not been put up for an evaluation for additional academic services, when they clearly needed them. The mainstream classroom teacher had not had the opportunity to refer the student, however several issues, such as the need for retention and services needed to be discussed. As the students ESOL teacher, I elected to approach the school’s academic counselor and see if I could refer the student myself. This brought to mind the need to devise constructive responses to problems as they arise. As a result of the eventual meeting, an action plan was put into place for the student.

I feel I had the opportunity to exercise sound professional judgment, as my concerns for the student were corroborated by the other teachers and counselors. As I reviewed the ninth policy, I was immediately reminded of my experience and I was able to appreciate the need to demonstrate professionally responsibility at the workplace.

That's a great example, Claudio! It's very important that we advocate for students, especially those that cannot advocate for themselves or do not have strong advocates.
