Tension- In Jarhead, tension is built in many ways. In one scene, they are in the middle of a desert, when they see a group of non-English speaking people. This creates tension in the story as the viewer may not know whether these people may be good or bad.

Surprise- In Jarhead, there is one main scene that generates a lot of surprise. In the scene, Swafford pulls a gun on his friend, and starts yelling obscure things at him. This may create surprise in the viewer as it may come off unexpected

Setting: when and where a story takes place in.

my personal choice is Wall-e.

Mystery - In Wall-e, the wide shots at the beginning show the deserted earth that Wall-e lives in. this creates a tone of wonder where you want to find out what happened to this version of earth.

Tension - In the beginning of Wall-E, a large rocket appears next to Wall-E while he is following a laser. He has to burrow down into the ground to survive the rocket blasts. This creates a tension that screams "survive or die".

Surprise - Near the end of Wall-E, the captain of the Axiom(ship) chooses to rebel the AI of the ship and drag it back to the earth. This surprises the watcher because during the whole story, we thought the captain was the major villain of the story.

Setting

Setting is when and where the story takes place and adds to the story and can affect the whole story!

Mystery- In the outer banks show, the whole group of friends are at the party. A man they have no idea who he is comes up to them and gives them an amazing offer. To find an amulet for 50,000$. They don't know much about it or what they are getting into but they accept it, which brings a lot more mystery later in the show!

tension- In outer banks the show, the last episode in season 5. There was a lot going on they were in a whole new country fighting with so many people. And JJ was stabbed, It was like everything went quiet. We didn't know if he was going die! It added a lot of tension because we didn't know what would happen.

surprise- In OBX season 5, we found of JJ's dad wasn't his real dad. His dad that raised him all his life was not his biological dad, but it was the man who hired him!

setting- Outer Banks of North Carolina

mystery- a group of teens searching for treasure and investigating the disappearance of a main character's father also while having conflict with the cooks and they call them selves the poges all while the cooks steal there gold that they found

tension- the town split and the cut was for the poges and the cooks were rich and tension was rising between them as John.b started dating Sarah everything became worse with rave (her brother) and her ex boy friend which was mad at John .b and made it hard for him and his friends to do anything

surprise- in the end of the show for now as they are coming out with a new season coming out but in the end for now it truned out when both the poges and JJ dad was looking for the blue crown and when JJ found it first in the dirt wind JJ dad stabbed him and he died and the poges berried him in the sand and planned the revenge for the next season leaving us on a cliff hanger

When and where the story takes place.

Mystery - In the movie Weapons, Aaron's house is super odd. The house has newspapers covering the windows and vines growing in front of the doors. Because we don't know what's inside, it could be dangerous.

Tension - In the movie weapons, Aaron's teacher wants to go into the house to see what's happening. Around her it is dark and there are crickets and as she gets closer it gets darker. It added a lot of tension because we didn't know if she was going to back out or if she would get hurt.

Surprise - In the movie weapons, Aaron's teacher walks in the dark house and goes down stairs into the basement. The basement is covered in cobwebs and what seems to be odd liquid on the floor. She turns the corner to find a bunch of posessed students!

The place and time a story takes place

Mystery - In Home Alone Kevin is home by himself while his family was on their way to Paris. Kevin's family didn't know that they forgot Kevin while they were heading to the airport. Kevin was at home by himself doing things that would keep him entertained till he had to defend himself and his house from the bandits.

Tension - In Home Alone while Kevin is trying to protect his house his family was getting to the airport and they didn't notice he was still gone. As Kevin's family got on the plane they still didn't realize Kevin was on the plane till Mid-flight. Mid-flight Kevin's mother Kate realized that Kevin wasn't on the plane. Once they landed in Paris they went to see if there was any available flights straight back to Chicago. There wasn't any flights available so Kate stayed at the airport till she found a way to get back to Kevin.

Surprise - Kevin was able to keep himself and the house safe from the bandits by having a Christmas party. It was Christmas morning and Kate was the first one back home because she took multiple flights to get back to Kevin. The rest of the family followed along and got home roughly after Kate did by waiting to get a direct flight back to Kevin and their house in Chicago and they all spent Christmas day together.

Mystery- In Wednesday season 1, there is a killer on the loose. It is in first person from Wednesday's perspective. Since it is from her perspective she doesn't know who the killer is and must figure it out.

Tension- In Wednesday season 2, there is lots of tension. There is one scene where Pugsley her little brother gets taken. Wednesday doesn't know where he is but we do which builds lots of tension.

Surprise- In Wednesday season 2, Wednesday goes to kill Tyler but ends up cutting him free. This comes as a surprise to the viewers because they are supposed to be enemies.

Mystery : In the wizard of oz the main character was gifted by the good fairy ruby red heels and was told to go to the green man and can ask for a wish as she gets on she meets 3 other people who want stuff from the green man so she lets them tag along. as going down the yellow brick road the Which is trying to get back "her ruby shoes"

Tension: when the which caught her all she wanted were the shoes but every time that the Which tried to get the shoes she got turned down or the good fairy came to save her.

Surprises: when to which tried to say she new the wizard to try and steal his powers and get the ruby shoes.

setting: when and where a story takes place

I chose Dexter

Mystery- the story creates mystery using the setting because every season there's a new serial killer/antagonist. and Dexter has to find out who they are and how to get a hold of them to kill them. how this builds mystery is because the story takes place in Miami. Miami is a very heavily populated area, where a lot of murderers live. So he uses his job as a forensics analyst-(his surroundings) to be able to find out who the antagonist of the season is and how to get rid of them.

tension- the author uses then setting to help build tension. They do this by having him be a forensics analyst in Miami metro police station as well as making his sister a cop. this builds tension because that puts more observant people in the surroundings so that if he makes a tiny slip up which he does many times. A slip up could make it so he either dies or gets caught.

surprise- the author uses the setting in Dexter to create surprise. the author does this by making the people around him slowly find out that he is the bay harbor butcher or that he is a serial killer. the author also creates surprise when they have the main villain from season 5 The trinity killer kill Rita(Dexter's wife) this was a surprise because we didn't know that she would be killed. this is using the setting because it affects the people around him.

Setting - That Christmas in London in the winter time

Mystery - In the movie That Christmas he didn't know there wasn't any school on that day because he lives on the other side of town and didn't get the messages but his classmates did. He went to the school and then he found out there was no school. The principle was there and he saw he but he didn't want her to see him but she did. This created mystery because we didn't know if he was gonna get in trouble or what was gonna happen next.

Tension - In the movie That Christmas he his principle took him in the school when there was no school. He had to do school work when there wasn't any school. This created tension because he got taken into school when there wasn't any school and we didn't know if he was gonna be doing hard work or if he was gonna be in trouble. It was nerve racking because he was a good kid and the principle was rude and he didn't need to be in trouble.

Surprise - In the movie That Christmas the kid actually liked what he did in school that day. The principle made the work he had to do fun. This was surprising because the principle is normally mean and when she made it fun it was shocking. It was also surprising when he liked it he normally doesn't like school or the principle but je liked it.

Setting: Where the story takes place and when the story takes place. (Whovill during Christmas)

Mystery- In Whovill Christmas was a big deal and everyone celebrated it. The Grinch hated Christmas and nobody really knew why.

Tension- Cindy Lou wanted to go up to the Grinch's cave. Nobody ever goes up there and it is basically forbidden, but she is brave enough to because she has such a big and caring heart. Cindy had no clue what was going to happen when she knocked on the door.

Surprise- At the end of the movie the Grinch stole Christmas. He felt guilty after doing this so he told everyone what he had done. Instead of them being extremely mad at him he joined around the giant Christmas tree and began to sing with them.

Mystery- In the movie Elf, it takes place in the North Pole. Buddy the Elf is the main character, and he was always a little off. He was way bigger than the other elves, like double the size. And he didn't think anything of it.

Tension- When Buddy the Elf finds out that he is not really an elf and he is actually a human, it causes a lot of tension between Buddy and the other elves. Then they have to tell him the true story about how Santa adopted him after he crawled into his bag when he was a baby.

Surprise- The biggest surprise is when Buddy finds out where his dad lives and that he is on the naughty list, which is really surprising because Buddy's dad can't be on the naughty list when Buddy loves Christmas and is on the nice list. This brings a great deal of surprise to the watchers.

The narrator's angle on a story.

scooby's POV helped solve the mystery of the Luna ghost and who the Luna ghost is. Scooby found the monsters first because the monster baited Scooby with fake hamburgers. At the end they eventually solved the mystery of the college kids getting brain washed.

Tension

Scooby and shaggy were hiding in a barrel trying to solve the Luna ghost but when they were shaggy was shaking from fear. Shaggy said "stop shaking Scooby and Scooby said to me that's you" and they got spotted by the Luna ghost. Then the Luna ghost set Scooby doo's tail on fire and Scooby Doo popped out of the barrel and blew the fire out.

Surprise

Scooby got surprised by a monster while inside a building and Velma was solving the damoradius and what it was used for. From Scooby POV he was surprised by the monster Scooby embarrassed Fred and he said "There is no such thing as monster's". At the end they found out that Mr. mondavarius was fake and the real one was trapped and the fake mondavarius was scrappy Doo and he was really mad.

Setting- the time and place the story takes place.

Mystery

In "Fueled" the cat was in her car in the woods trying to find the dog who killed her husband. The woods were snowy and dark.

Tension

In "Rush Hour" the two directives/cops trying to find a girl that was kidnapped on her way to school. We don't know who took her or where she is.

Surprise

When they find the girl where she was last seen which was a hotel. it was surprising to find her safe and taking her back to her dad.

The setting is taking time and place in a story

Mystery - In "Fueled" the car was driving though the dark forest at night and she didn't have so much gas to keep going.

Tension - Seeing the cat loved one died to the killer flash in her eyes and wanted to get the killer who killed her loved one.

Surprise - When the gas station blew up and everything went in flames. The cat didn't check the pig and ran straight down for her car. When she went in her car she saw her self as the killer.

Area, time, place, weather

Tension-They are in a city it's dark and rainy when a flying Kaiju appears they try to fight back with boats and cars as weapons and suddenly they start floating the Kaiju has grabbed them and dragging them deeper and deeper into the dark sky reaching higher and higher. As there cockpit starts freezing they summon a sword and cut of the Kaiju's leg off. They begin falling to the earth burning in the sky as they descend to earth continuing to speed up until crash they smash into the ground obliterating a whole football stadium.

Mystery-They begin descending deeper into the dark ominous water with a mission to destroy the Kaiju. As they get closer the the portal they see this monster creeping to them something bigger than they have ever seen but they push forwards into battle weapons in hand they begin the battle. The Kaiju is not letting up as they pound the creature with nothing else they have the team split up then the team mate self destructs saving main characters and allowing him to finish the mission they jump in the portal crashing down an then boom! the main characters make it out alive just by the tips of there fingers.

Surprise-The scientist makes a crazy almost outlandish idea in his lab full of Kaiju body parts. He says why don't we merge with a Kaiju brain. Every one called him crazy so he snuck away into his lab unnoticed then he merges he sees the thoughts and feelings of the brain. Then he comes across a dark and mysterious place and the creature begin to shake and rattle his thought spinning them into a tornado when all the sudden his partner takes him out of the merge.
