Natural selection is when nature favors one trait over another, making it so that one trait increases the survival chances of the organism. On Daphne Major between the years 1976 and 1978 a major drought hit the island. And as such the plant life, here being the portulaca and tribulus seeds, decreased in abundance. With the Portulaca seed dying out altogether. This is important for, the portulaca seed is a soft shelled, small seed. Easily accessible by the Finch population as a major food source. While the Tribulus seed is a large, hard shelled seed difficult to eat. So when the portulaca seed died off, the finch, losing a major food source, population decreased massively. But there was a certain type of Finch bird that died. The Tribulus seed is easier to eat when a Finch bird has a longer, deeper beak. So all the Finch birds that had longer beaks were able to access a steady food source during the drought, while the ones with shorter, narrower beaks. Died off with the normal Portulaca food source gone. So now, with only long, deep beaked birds left alive, their also the only ones left to reproduce. And two common traits of long beaks will be passed on to the next generation who will then be able to access the Tribulus seed also. The Medium Ground Finch has evolved. Nature decided what traits were desirable and what traits were not. The desirable ones live on, the undesirable die. Natural selection caused for the beak of the Medium Ground Finch to increase in size on Daphne major from '76 to '78.
