❏ In what ways have you met the task demands? (Keywords : healthy, manipulative skills)
- I replaced some of the nutella with peanut butter which is a healthier option. And I made use of a few manipulative skills in the process of making my bread, such as when my bread didn't seem to have the right texture, I let it proof for a little longer so it will come out smoother and in the right texture.

❏ Reflect on the practical test session

❏ Were you able to manage time?
- Yes, I managed to finish within the stipulated time.

❏ Did you face difficulties? How did you overcome them?
- The nutella was getting a bit messy so I had to constantly wash my hands in order to not contaminate and dirty the bread further.

❏ How would you have done it differently?
- I may have done the twisting differently as I forgot the exact method to twist the bread so I just tried my best, however, the end result was not as nice as the one I did during the second experimentation lesson.

❏ Reflect on the food blogging process

❏ How useful were the nutritional tools?
- Very useful as Peanut Butter is lower in sugar, higher in protein and often lower in your unhealthy fats. (a healthier option)

❏ How manageable were the manipulative skills for you?

How purposeful were the experimentation lessons in helping you come up with your final creation?
- The experimentation sessions allowed me to manage my time well during the practical and know how long it takes my bread to bake and what I can do while waiting for the bread to proof/bake. And also allowed me to know what I can improve on/change e.g. add more nutella for a more flavourful taste

Processes: Proofing, dextrinisation

3 takeaways:
1. I learnt that we can marinate the chicken with many different types of sauces as the chicken alone has no taste hence the sauces help to create a flavour for the chicken.
2. Using multi grain rice instead of normal rice has many benefits such as whole grains are high in fibre and slowly digested, so they do not dramatically raise blood sugar levels the way that white rice would. And using multi grain rice also requires a different amount of water to be added compared to white rice.
3. We should fry the rice with the Chinese herbs and oil to allow the rice to be flavourful (evenly) by caramelising some of the starches. It also helps distribute fat-soluble flavours in the other ingredients.
4. Chicken goes through cameralisation and Maillard reaction.

We have to creating a hole/well in the middle of a bowl when mixing the wet and dry ingredients for the ingredients to mix well.
2, The water used to activate the yeast has to be of warm temperature as if temperature is too high, the yeast will be killed and hence will not allow the bread to rise, and bread will not ferment.
3. Bread dough has to be proofed for a while before baking, for fermentation (yeast causes bread to increase in size), and bread may even double in size.
4.

3 themes evident in the movie
1. Money
- In the movie, the family presented to us in the movie is a average middle-class family in Singapore. And because of the economical crisis Singapore was facing back then during the late 1990s, they had several financial woes and also faced problems such as unemployment. Jiale's father had lost tens of thousands of dollars in buying stocks and eventually, lost his job in sales and had to take on a more menial job of being a security guard. On the other hand, Jiale's mother, was pregnant with a second child, which meant that they would require more money for hospital bills, child's education, etc. However, the family finds itself in increasingly dire financial straits. And adding on, Jiale's mother had invested money on a motivational camp/self-improvement seminar ("希望在于自己“) which turned out to be a scam and the creator of the motivational camp had fled with all the money. Money was also the main reason why they had to decide to unemploy Terry, their dosmetic helper, as their monetary woes were escalating as time went by. Therefore, money was a very significant and important theme in this movie that sets the scene and plot.
2. Relationships
- There are many relationship connections between characters in the movie. One example is the relationship between Jiale and his beloved grandfather, even though the grandfather did not make an appearance in the movie, through Jiale's actions and words, I can tell that before his grandfather's passing, they had a very close-knitted relationship, as Jiale's grandfather clearly means a lot to him.Another example is the initially stormy relationship between Terry and Jiale, which blossoms into a bond that is part friendship, part mother-child affection. Jiale's devotion to his grandfather (his caregiver before he passed on), explains his initial antagonism towards Terry, yet it doesn’t take long before the he embraces his new caregiver, and friend. Therefore, this movie revolves around the relationship connections between the characters and how it evolves over time.
3. Hardship
- In the movie, the different characters each go through several challenges and desperate times. Be it Jiale's father facing unemployment, losing money in stocks, scrapping his car and working as a taxi driver, or Jiale's mother working conscientiously for a thankless job despite her own vexations. And Terry having to moonlight by working as a hairdresser at Lucky Plaza during the weekends to earn extra cash for her son back in Phillipines, and Jiale desperately making a last ditch attempt of predicting the lottery numbers in hope to retain his beloved maid. All these show human conditions during hardships and shows their tenacity in the face of adversity.

Acceptance --> Respect --> status of domestic helpers
--> How relationships form
Secrets --> perception of others (embarrassment, 'losing face')
Hope & Fear--> Lottery -> $
--> Where do you place?
--> 'believe in yourself'
--> uncertainty
Tamagochi (raising digital chickens)--> responsibility --> raising real chickens (Jiale's Bond with chickens)
Motherhood --> jealous when Jiale's forming a bond with Terry (huge dilemma)
"what is essential about life is invisible to the eye"

I feel that storytelling is important. Storytelling is very effective for learning, as stories are easy to remember, and will probably stay etched in our minds for a long time. That's why we can use short stories to remember math or science formulas! Storytelling forges connections among people and between people, ideas and creativity. And stories convey the culture, language and history that unites people from all over the world together. Storytelling also has aspects that work for all visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. Visual for the mental pictures imagined through the telling of the story/ the pictures in the storybook, auditory through hearing the story be read by the storyteller, and being able to remember the story better and kinesthetic by remembering the emotional feelings, moral of the story as well as the connections in the story. Lastly, Storytelling is what connects us to our humanity. It is what allows us to look back and remember the past, and catch a glimpse of our future. Storytelling has existed ever since humans first walked the earth, and it is a tradition that should not be broken by our generation and should be passed down from one generation to the next. Therefore, I feel that Storytelling is important.

YES:
- convey message in an impactful manner
- pass on knowledge from generation to generation. - wisdom
- allows us to empathise -> build relationships (sensitise)
- to remember, to make sense of the chaotic world around us
-
NO:
- fear mongering
- fake news
- desensitise
- overglority -> -ve social impact
-

This sculpture is made up of 2 parts. The first part is the design and texture of the cardboard, which is torn, exposed, wrinkled, peeled, and stabbed. These textures represent the anxiety/stress/fear that most of us face during our day-to-day life.
The second part looks at the pyramids on the top of the cardboard part. You can't really tell but there are actually a whooping 52 triangles of different sizes in this sculpture. It was definitely very time-consuming as it took several days to finish folding 52 of them. Triangles represent the past, present and future. I hope to convey that we should let go of the past and have hope for the future we are working towards, despite whatever we are facing right now. The triangles are also of different colours so that it looks more vibrant. Colours are closely linked to our emotions, and the colours in this sculpture look more happy and optimistic. They have an uplifting on one's mood to give us hope in anxiety. Now, why I chose the number 52 is because, the number 52 represents (personal) freedom. I think that freedom gives hope to the people who feels trapped by anxiety/stress/fear, allowing one to break free of these burdens and see light at the end of the tunnel.

I think my artwork does express hope but maybe not in the best way I could have. I think looking back, I should have maybe explored other ways of expressing hope as the folding of triangles involves origami. Origami is something I am more familiar with as I have always been interested in origami. So I think I could have experimented with other methods of expressing hope in anxiety/fear/stress, stepping out of my comfort zone and being more adventurous.

What I think I have done well in is that I really started out with no clue on what to do, and I think it is quite commendable that I was willing to try something completely new to me. I also spent lots of time outside lessons to work on my sculpture and plan on my next step in the process, so I think I deserve a pat on the back for putting in much effort.

What I think I could have done better is that I should have made a mini prototype before I started out. Maybe have a clear plan on what I wanted to do before I started out. I think I could have also thought out my many ideas, and explored further as I am not very satisfied about how my artwork looks like. To be very honest, it doesn’t look very aesthetically pleasing to me. But I think it’s okay as I really put in as much effort as I could and I will learn from this experience. Due to the lack of time I had, I could only go with one option which was quite regrettable for me.

For the photography part, I tried to be as creative as possible as I noticed this new trend of using a toilet paper roll and a torchlight to create a “spotlight”. So I decided to try it out for myself and it turned out better than I expected.

Artist: Yayoi Kusama
The elements of shape, space and colour and the principles of emphasis, pattern and repetition.
In Yayoi Kusama's artworks, she repetitively uses polka dots of different sizes. This paved the way for minimalism, These dots show her anxieties through repetition as it is linked to the anxiety she experienced during her childhood as well as hallucinations. Therefore, her work can also be read as a means of therapy, of confronting a fear by representing it on a grand scale. The colours she uses are very bold and vibrant as well, which is very attractive to the eye. Her artworks also make viewers feel happy aside from the vibrant sense of colour and pattern, her works have been an obsessive quality.
One question I would pose to the artist is why would she use dots to express her anxiety instead of other shapes?

1. Why not jump straight to the final work? Why try out so many options when you're not going to use most of it:
- Ideation and looking into different ways we can present something would allow us to experiment, and know what works and what doesn't. These "experiements" are all part of the design process and is what will bring us to our final work.
2. How is creativity linked to failure? Could failure be valuable?
- Creativity relies on failure. The most familiar form of fear come from the fear of failure. The fear inhibits your path to creativity, as if you are not wiling to branch outside the norm and risk exposing yourself to the judgement of others, the fear will hinder your creativity as you are fearful to explore or even try different methods. But failure is valuable as it is necessary for us to improve and grow, a powerful conduit that brings us closer to our final work. It is important to learn to accept failures as it is all part of the process.

"Leave the stage with no regrets"

artist statement:
My artwork revolves around the instrument, the Erhu. A message I wanted to convey was the ups and downs I went through in my Erhu journey, but despite this, I really enjoy playing the instrument and performing on stage as the first chair. I started learning this instrument since Primary 2 and I have been in the Chinese Orchestra CCA ever since, now in RGCO. As the RGCO motto is "Leave the stage with no regrets", I strongly believe this as a Chinese saying goes, 台上十分钟，台下十年功，which means ten years of practice just for the ten minutes on stage, it takes much practice to master songs and be able to perform well, hence my artwork name. The reason why I chose more vibrant yet soft colours for the background sunset is also because I love catching sunsets to the extent where I even wake up at 6am+ during the holidays just to catch a sunrise, and such pink and orangey sunsets can start my day right.

evaluation of painting:
I think my merits are trying to make use of different painting textures in my artwork and the blending of the background was quite well done, and also I think it really documents what I had intended to, but not entirely. I had wanted to include several pictures of me playing but I found it really hard to find any and taking them was very difficult and tough too, the position has to be so that I look like I was sitting on the Erhu in the painting which was quite hard to position and took me about an hour to get a photo so I decided to just go with my best one. I also experimented with different colours and I found this background pink orange and yellow combination to be the most compatible and yet giving off a warm vibe which represents the warmth I feel from seniors and friends in an Orchestra, where I truly feel happy. However, I think I could have included more details because I think the Erhu's base looks rather plain. And also, I think the blue-ish clouds didn't complement very well with the background and look a little bit out of place so maybe I could have used a lighter shade of blue, but at the same time, I think it makes it look even more vibrant which may not be a bad thing too. I feel that I could have included more elements of my artist reference, which is something I regret not doing. But overall, I am not too satisfied with my artwork but I think it still looks quite decent and is true to my identity which I hoped to portray.

This was a really exciting yet daunting experience for me and I think I have learnt so much, from surrealistic collages to the painting techniques, I think I have benefited a lot from this few lessons. I also think I enjoyed these lessons more than the sculpture ones!

State the song and the instrument you practiced today.
I'm Yours - Jason Mraz
What is the key?
C Majoy.
What is the number of beats?

List the chords you have learnt.
Am, C, D, F, G
What are some things you discovered when you were
learning to play the chords? How can you apply this
discovery?
I discovered that the chords in the songs are limited to only a few and are repetitive - ostinato. Ostinato is used more often for popular music as compared to classical music. I also discovered that adding thirds above the bassline thickens the texture and makes the chord richer. I can include bassline in my garageband EDM, to form the baseline of chord progression and to add colour to the texture of the music.

What is your target for next week?
My target for next week is to create different patterns of rhythm for one song to add texture to the song.

I had a hard time with this as I wasn't sure about what to do exactly yet, so the previous 2 show my designs but I felt like it would look very separate and not cohesive, so under the guidance of Ms Wang, I decided to go with the 3rd one and the 4th one is a variation of the 3rd design. I felt that this part of ideation is always very difficult for me because I am very indecisive and also not very creative. Hence, I think this ideation segment allowed me to really explore out of my comfort zone and experiment even if it ends up badly, it's okay.

I think in the end I found it rather hard to use the artist reference of Yayoi Kusama, so what I did was to follow her concept of repetition, hence the clouds.

1. What did I discover about myself through the modules (state 3)
- I think I am quite good with organisational skills, e.g. in FND, making sure our working space is neat and in order to prevent mixing up of ingredients
- How I work and communicate well with others. Because some modules require cooperation and teamwork e.g. in music, having to compose our own music and others may have differing ideas which requires compromise in order to reach a consensus. For example in FND, it was mostly partner work and we had to work well together and plan out our designated areas
- I am not very good at time management and managing the project to meet the deadlines as quite a few times, I find myself having to rush the project as I have failed to plan my time wisely.
2. Common traits across all the aesthetic modules
- All require creativity, designing and planning a project on our own
- All involve a medium of aesthetics, and varsely different forms of art, and things we have never really touched or experienced before. e.g. Surrealism and also garage band EDM and also making curry.
3. What have you picked up about creativity? How have you stretched your creativity?
- I have picked up that creativity has no bounds and we should try to step out of our comfort zone in order to reach greater heights, and to create something original and fresh. I think I have stretched my creativity by experimenting with different styles that may not be of my own, and maybe try to combine some styles. E.g. in art, use colour combinations that may seem more wild as compared to complementary colours, in FND, plating our food.
4. What values did I exercise in the creative process?
-
-

1. How can I apply aesthetics to enrich my life and that of others
Perform in an orchestra, allowing others to enjoy our music, serving as entertainment and joy. Also, even practising the Erhu at home, can allow me to relieve some stress and temporarily forget about my troubles. Better appreciate music, with more knowledge on musical theory e.g. timbre, tempo, etc. and appreciate that composing music is not as easy as it seems.
- give others an identity, something to look forward to
2. How can I make use of these skills and talents to make a positive contribution to the community?
I can make use of these skills and talents by taking part in CCA VIAs, (the last time we performed at the hospital for the elderly), and hopefully be able to bring more joy to their lives and make them feel less lonely.
