Mental Health and Physical Activity by Sarah Skipwith

The argument that physical activity can positively affect cognitive functioning is a powerful one. This has been used to advocate for more physical activity in schools. Increased levels of physical activity have significant effects in reducing depression, anxiety, psychological
distress, and emotional disturbance in children. Physical activity also has positive influences on concentration, memory and
classroom behaviour.

Peer Reviewed article by François Trudeau and Roy J Shephard (2008)
Connections between academic achievement and involvement in PE, school PA and sport programs have been examined, based on a systematic review of currently available literature.
They found that with adequate instruction, PA can be added to the school curriculum by taking time from other subjects without risk of negatively influencing student academic achievement. As well as, adding time to "academic" or "curricular" subjects by taking time from physical education programs does not enhance grades in these subjects and may be detrimental to health.

When physical activity is restricted during school hours, children do not compensate for loss of physical activity after school, resulting in children who are incredibly sedentary throughout the majority of the day. Approximately 20% of school-age children have a diagnosable mental health disorder that requires psychological treatment. Through a comprehensive synthesis of the literature, 73 studies yielding 246 effect sizes found that increased levels of physical activity had significant effects in reducing depression, anxiety, psychological distress, and emotional disturbance in children.
