In the trailer it showed a baseball card that led me to believe this.  In the first chapter, Doug tells us that he personally met that player and even had his cap and later got his jacket. I also connected that the picture of the bird from the trailer to painting. His father is rarely in a good mood, and he treats Doug and his mother like absolute garbage. Both of his brothers bully him, beat him up, etc. I thought that he was had something happen in his life that was painful because of the wording that was chosen in the trailer. For starters, it says, "Not everything is whole, you know." This just gives a prime example of him telling us he's not whole as a person.
