I have used the convention of having a large clear masthead as I have chosen a font which capitalizes all the letters. I have also made it large and bold so it is emphasised. I have also made it black, as black against white is very legible and clear to the reader.

For my image I have used and followed the conventions as I have ensured my model is making eye-contact with the camera so they connect with the reader. Also I have taken the image as a medium close-up which is also a key convention, it enables the audience to see the models facial expression clearly.

I have ensured I have used the convention of having a clear house style. I have kept to having just 3 main colours: black, white & pink. I have chosen these colours because from my questionnaire results my target audience mostly wanted black, white & another colour. I chose pink to be the other colour as I think it works well and brightens up my media product. My media product is aimed to appeal to both sexes, which I think it does as the pink isn't too bright.

I have included a diagonal banner in the bottom left-hand corner which is a another convention I have used. This has information in about winning festival tickets in a magazine competition. This is quite a conventional place to put competition info as it stands out and is separate from the cover lines and strap lines.

Media products follow key codes and conventions that are characteristics which should be used in different forms of media text. These codes and characteristics ensure it looks effective and like a conventional media product. These are usually followed and rarely challenged as they have been used for existing media products and they work well as they have been 'tried and tested'. Sometimes these conventions can be developed or slightly changed to fit a particular genre or to construct a specific representation which makes that media product original and creates a unique selling point.

These are some examples of existing media products from music magazine contents pages. Even though they are all very different they are still following key conventions such as the main title of magazine/contents. The layout is set out in columns of text and images. They all have one main image too which dominates the page. I would say the bottom right-hand contents page which is in black & white slightly challenges the conventions as contents is staggered in the way it is written and is on the right of the page which is unusual.

I think the top 3 DPS's look very effective as they have a large letter in the centre of the article which takes up a whole page. This looks good because it is the name of the featured artist and it draws the audience's eye to it. That's the only convention that Q seem to challenge, as the rest of their products follow the key conventions you would expect to see such as a large one page image, text in columns and a stand first.

The colour scheme is unusual as pink is usually associated with females. However, my magazine is targeted at both males and females, so in this sense I have developedthe conventions slightly as most uni-sex magazines use another colour such as blue, red, or green. I chose pink as it is different and fresh it also brightens my product too.

The masthead develops the conventions too as the 'F' and the 'N' have pointy ends which makes the masthead 'Fusion' uneven. I think this creates a futuristic effect which is one of my brand values for my magazine. In most magazines the masthead is completely flat along the bottom and edges and I wanted to change this convention slightly.

I have challenged the conventions as the models name is all capitalised bar the 'i' which I kept lower case. I have done this as not only do I think it improves the visual effect of my front cover, but it also conveys that the model is unusual and different and is <strike>not the average person</strike> you may have expected.

I have also challenged the conventions as the image has a shadow around the one side of it. This is very rare in magazines as most photographers <strike>do not include shadows</strike> in their images. I thought it would be important to keep the shadow as it is so relevant to the headline 'Stepping out of the Shadows' and acts as a play on words which I think is very effective.

I have used the convention of having the title contents, my title is in a sans-serif font style which makes it look modern and youthful. It is in black which is the same colour as my masthead 'Fusion'. I have used kerning to allow all the letters to fit without adjusting font size. I wanted 'contents' to be the same size as 'Fusion' so it would stand out, I have also made it bold for emphasis. I have also followed the house style from my Front Cover.

I have also used a large main image which relates to an article with a page number on. I have chosen 'Elijah' to be my image which relates to an article on page 4. The image takes up around half of the page which allows for the 'blurb of contents'.

Also I have included by-lines, editors signature, page numbers, date and issue number. These are all conventions which I have used in my contents page. These ensure my product looks professional and like a conventional contents page of what you would expect in a music magazine.

By having titles to my blurb of contents this is using the key conventions as in almost every contents page in magazines they have 'features' and/or 'news' and 'reviews. This means the reader can pin point to what type of article they want to read.

I have also only used one image whereas many contents pages have one main image and a small image or two. I have done this as I think my image is strong and looks very effective when it takes up so much of the page. Also I did not want my contents page to be too 'wordy' so I kept text to minimum. I just included the necessary 'Features' & 'News/Reviews'. This will give the reader an insight into what articles will be inside Fusion Music Magazine.

I have chosen this contents page from 'VIBE' music magazine to compare it with 'FUSION' as they are contrasting but also have similarities.

DIFFERENCES

The vibe contents page is completely black and white whereas mine has colour and pink shapes. 'Contents' is written on 3 lines which is quite cliché whereas mine is written the conventional way.

SIMILARITIES

They both have just one column of text with 2 separate headings one which is 'features'.

They also both have only one image which takes up half the page.

How I have USED the Conventions when Constructing my Double Page Spread

I have included a drop cap at the start of my interview which shows I am using the conventions. I have also included his name as the main title which shows who it is about. I have also laid my DPS out using guides/grid and divided them into 2 columns on the one page.

The main image is 'Elijah' and takes up the whole of the left page. This gives the reader a true feeling about the article and what the person looks like, it gives them a visual image instead of imagining. Many music magazines like the examples below use a large image of a celebrity too so I have used this convention so my DPS looks conventional.

I have credited the photographer and the writer of the double page which is called a , as this is a key convention in any magazine article/double page spread.

Also I have used the convention that colours should be used which are consistent with the front cover and contents page. I have stuck to the same three main colours which are pink, black and white.

How I have DEVELOPED the Conventions

I have developed the conventions slightly as I have added props into the image such as jewellery and left tattoos of model visible. I have made use of guttering whilst constructing and mediating my DPS. However, this is usually done with invisible lines whereas I have added a long black line which runs from one side of the left page right to the end of the right. This is to show where the article is finishing and it also makes the visual syntax of my DPS looks more organised.

How I have CHALLENGED the Conventions

I do not believe I have distinctly challenged any conventions of double page spreads whilst constructing my own. The only thing I may have slightly challenged is filling in some of the title's letter with the house styles pink.
