Within the army an authoritarian type leader would be ideal as a quick response answer is required when in an intense fire fight. if everyone was giving their view it will take too long to come up with a final decision by which point it may be too late for any action. For example, if there was a squad pinned down by gun fire the commander would need to make a quick decision for a plan of action to get out of that situation. however if he/she waited for all of his team members to give their view it may come to a point where the enemy would be upon them and kill them all.

The advantages of this leadership style are that it allows for decisions to be made quickly, as only one person is required to make decisions and give orders., and people follow orders without question. Authoritarian leadership is also very resource and time efficient, and the people working beneath the leader can benefit from their experience and learn to work independently from their leader. this makes authoritarian leadership an effective way of conducting training exercises.
For these reasons authoritarian leadership is widely used in the armed forces.

The disadvantages of this leadership style is that because only the leader holds the authority to make decisions it prevents other's ideas being used. Additionally, authoritarian leadership gives almost all power to the single leader they can easily abuse the power, and there is nothing that the people beneath them can do to prevent it. this can be prevented by having someone scrutinising the actions of the leader, whether that is their superior or a separate person or group.

One of the main advantages of democratic leadership is that everyone in the group has equal say in decision making. Additionally, it allows for the group to benefit from everyone's experience, knowledge and opinion. This is especially useful for example in the House of Lords in Parliament where every Lord holds equal weight and can contribute their knowledge in their field, for example a retired fire chief offering advice on the topic of fire station closures.

One of the disadvantages is that it can sometimes be time consuming to reach a decision as many people could have conflicting opinions. This prevents democratic leadership from being used in situations where timing is important or there are serious consequences if a decision is made poorly.
