From 2001 up to a year as recent as 2021, the city has lost about 40 hectares of tree cover. This is a consequence brought about by the city's overdevelopment and expansion of infrastructures. In fact, According to DENR'S inventory of trees, only 28% of the city's land cover remains with only 14% of them being pine trees. The ideal percentage of forest cover should at least be 30%-40% than what it currently is.

The eleventh SDG aims to develop urban areas to be safe, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable, make housing and transportation adequate and accessible, preserve a country's cultural heritage, and the like.

Baguio is a growing and developing city that will only progress further over time. However, that very development has already brought about negative consequences that affects the city. Mayor Magalong himself said the Baguio City currently cannot support its communities sustainably. For one, traffic has become quite a major problem for Baguio due to the fact that the city accepts about 600,000 tourists per year. This may seem like a boon for its economy but it only congests the city more since Baguio has long since exceed its population capacity, and with limited parking space paired with Baguio's narrow and steep roads, this only seems to add to the local resident's ire. Additionally, pollution of any kind seems to be at an all time high within Baguio City. The massive influx of vehicles that come and go have worsened air pollution, and two of Baguio's rivers have been classified as two of the most polluted not just in the region, but in the country as a whole.

One of the projects that Baguio City have started in order to combat both urban and environmental related issues is by shifting to energy efficient lighting technology. Spearheaded by Congressman Bernardo Vergara, this project aims to utilize New GE led lighting technology starting with Burnham Park. These decorative lights brought about even more vibrancy and brightness out of the park while being energy efficient at the same time, being only 90 watts per post which saves the city up to about 60% of energy costs. These lights also is sufficient, lasting as long as 50,000 hours (equivalent to about 11 years).

This is may be a small and subtle attempt, but it does promote the use of environment-friendly technology that can be translated and used against the other issues plaguing the city.

This contactless technology aims to provide services to the people more efficiently, respond to incidents faster, and improve peace and safety for its citizens.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) themselves recognized and praised Baguio's transition into a smart, data-driven, and technological city.
