"There Is a Bird on Your Head!" by Mo Willems

This is fictional picture book that the students will love. The students are sure to get a laugh as they watch Piggie explain to Gerald he has a bird on his head, then the trouble begins because now there are two birds. I love this story because there are very little illustrations in the background of these illustrations. This will be useful when teaching the students to notice things that stand out to them as a good reader. For example, the author uses speech bubbles over top of the character's head that is speaking. The speech bubble is always the same color as the character speaking. I will add this story to my classroom library.
This book can be purchased at https://www.amazon.com/There-Bird-Your-Elephant-Piggie/dp/1423106865/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1543517484&sr=1-1&keywords=there%27s+a+bird+on+your+head

"I Broke My Trunk" by Mo Willems

I absolutely love the Elephant and Piggie series. These books are perfect for students who are in the beginning stages of reading. The students will notice the text change according to how the character is speaking. When Gerald or Piggie is yelling the text is very large, but when they are whispering the text is very very small. The author, Mo Willems has earned the Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal twice and three honor awards. He is also a Caldecott honor winner three times. In this story Gerald is telling Piggie the story of how he broke his trunk. It's taking Gerald a very long time to tell his story to Piggie, Piggie's expressions tell how he is feeling listening to the story. The students will laugh listening to Gerald's crazy story and watching the character's expressions. I would love to have this book for my classroom library.
This book can be purchased at https://www.amazon.com/Broke-Trunk-Elephant-Piggie-Book/dp/1423133099/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1543517330&sr=1-1&keywords=i+broke+my+trunk+mo+willems

"My First Biography Martin Luther King, Jr."

This biography picture book will be perfect to teach my students about Martin Luther King, Jr. during African American history month. This story explains how as a child Martin Luther King, Jr. noticed things were different in life. He wanted to create a fair and equal world for everyone. After he started speaking about how everyone should be treated equally, movements began and the world changed as we knew it. This story is colorful and will keep students attention. I would love to read this story aloud to them and have the students create their own biography about themselves. I will also add this book to my classroom library.
This book can be purchased at https://www.amazon.com/My-First-Biography-Martin-Luther/dp/0545142334/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1543516900&sr=1-1&keywords=my+first+biography+martin+luther+king%2C+jr

This story is perfect for beginner readers. It also teaches students to take responsibility for their actions. David has an excuse for every time he gets into trouble. However, he learns to say he is sorry and be forgiven. David is always mischievous in this book series. I would love to have the whole collection for my readers who are on low reading levels or just beginning to learn to read. The illustrations in these stories are beautiful, the author of these series has been awarded the Caldecott honor for his "No, David" books. These books would be perfect in my classroom library.
This book can be purchased at https://www.amazon.com/David-Gets-Trouble-Shannon/dp/0439050227
