There
are a number of sustainability subjects to look at and really analyze, however out of all of them the one that I believe has the biggest impact on us all is poverty. This online artifact will provide you with all of the tools you need to become an expert on the subject. Not to mention will help spread the word about how we can all make a difference from the inside of our classrooms. Lets help start the fire in our students to be the change that we need.

This lesson is intended for an 8th grade Language Arts classroom. Poverty is not an easy topic to talk about once you take a closer look at the hardships that some people have to face it is for this reason that a mature audience is needed. The intent is to focus in on how they can help make a change. I plan to start with poverty in our Phoenix area so students understand what they can do close to home. But ultimately I want them to learn about relief goals and programs that they can work with to help around the world.
*SWBAT define poverty. SWBAT conduct their own research and present their findings in a formal manner. SWBAT devise and implement a plan to help people living in poverty in Phoenix.
Day 1: True definition of poverty and what it means to live in poverty

Day 2: The 3 basic needs that people need to survive, and relief programs around the world.

Day 3: This day will be dedicated to learning about poverty in Phoenix . As well as looking up relief programs in the area.

Day 4: What can I do to make a difference? Students will devise and implement a plan to make a difference

Day 5: How can others help as well, plan is finalized
*Sustainability is about thinking about today to create a better tomorrow. Students will be encouraged to plan for a living of sustainability today.
Day 3 has been made into a lesson plan covering the following standards.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.2.a
Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information into broader categories; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.6-8.1
Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts.

Days 3 4 5 are all "work days" for the ultimate presentation on day 5

What did they do?

Students will learn about who O.P.H.D is and learn about the 3 categories that they have split basic needs into. Health, education, and standard of living. Each category will be broken up and looked at into greater detail. Health- child death, malnutrition. Education- School attendance, school completion. Standard of living- electricity, sanitation, cooking fuel, flooring, water, assets. Students will analyze and define some of these categories like malnutrition, and sanitation. Students will as a group come up with their own categories of basic needs. Do you agree or disagree with O.P.H.D . Students will be given what if scenarios to write about and to put themselves in the shoes of those living in poverty, now does it matter if you don't have things like sanitation, or school? How does basic needs tie into wants and needs and what does that mean in relation to poverty? Student will be able to define poverty as a whole.

What is poverty is Phoenix, what are our statistics and what relief programs are available to those who live in poverty in Phoenix?

Students will spend this day as a work day using the internet as a resource. Students are to create a research based presentation in which they share their findings to the class. Groups will be split up into 5's. Together they will create a short poster presentation. Each member will have their assigned roles. Data finder, presenter, recorder, relief program finder, and the connector who connects their findings to what they learned the days prior. The actual presentation will be displayed on the 5th day.

Students will learn that not having things like food, clean water, and even education all mean someone can be living in poverty. What does it mean to want something and need something? If you had to categorize all of the things in your life what things would you keep if you only had 3 things you could keep? Students will categorize their wants and needs using either pictures or words. Students will then compare their answers with others and as a group will come up with their own definition to wants and needs. How does that tie into poverty?
