Implementing Media and Collaboration Fluency in the Classroom

To implement media and collaboration fluency in my classroom, I developed a lesson on life cycles for students using a variety of medium. Students will be working with a partner to research life cycles which they will then teach to the class. Students will watch YouTube videos and read eBooks on the life cycles of a given living thing. They will then use their research to create a wiki space using graphics, text, and audio. They will need to collaborate with their partner on the content of their page and on the presentation. They will present their wiki space to the class to teach about life cycles. We will compile all the wiki pages to one wiki space to present to other second grade classes.

I also use collaboration fluency in my classroom in literacy circles. Students are introduced to several texts and they get to decide which one they would be interested in reading. Students are then put into groups based on the book that they chose. While in their literacy circle, they must work together to assign roles such as recorder, readers, speakers, etc. They read the story and respond in discussion forums within their group. The teacher serves as a facilitator but allows the students to control the flow of the activity. Students must present their story to the class in a creative way at the end of the project.

Both of these activities support my students development of media and collaboration fluency. In both activities student's end project must be delivered in an appropriate way so that their peers get the intended message. They must decide on what to use in their presentations to gain the attention of their peers and teach them the information. In both activities students must work together to develop their solutions and must utilize their strengths and different perspectives in that solution. These activities have helped me in the realization that my students must be ready to separate from their teachers when they leave school. They will need to be able to function in the 21st century and be literate in 21st century skills.
