Crenshaw is one of my favorite stories that we have read so far in REED 430. This text is unique and has a great story line. The main character and his family are going through a financial situation and rely on each other through the struggles. But, the main character has an imaginary friend who helps him that no one else is aware of, popping in when he least expects it. Crenshaw ultimately helps the main character through his hardest times. I think that the text is appropriate for grades 3rd-5th because of its complex sentences and vocabulary. The text is presented in chapters and therefore should be split up in a way that students may have time to break down every event. A skills-based activity that may relate to this book is having the children write down Jackson's emotions and the cause/effect of these feelings.

3.RL.KID.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring
explicitly to the text as a basis for the answers. 4.RL.KID.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in a text, such as a character’s thoughts, words, or actions.

The Giving Tree is about a young boy who finds friendship with a certain tree. He loved the apples that she gave him and the shade provided. The tree became sad when the boy became older and did not want to play with the tree, he only asks for things. He took and took from the tree until it was nothing but a stump. The tree was always happy to give to the boy, but she was never enough for him until he was very old and needed a place to rest. The message presented is that the tree has a sacrificial love for the boy when he has eyes for earthly possessions. I think this book is best fit for kindergarten-1st grade because of its simple sentences and vocabulary, making the events easy to follow along with. One activity that children may participate in is cutting out a tree with construction paper and writing on it what they may give in a friendship.

1.FL.PA.2.

I Am Enough is a great story for younger children because it teachers the importance of our differences and gives reasons of why we are here on this Earth. This text teachers children about self-acceptance and embracing our uniqueness from one another. I believe that this text is appropriate for any elementary school age because the structure and vocabulary presented throughout the text is simple and well understood. One thing that might be harder for younger ages to comprehend is the metaphors being used. For example in the book it states, "Like the trees, I'm here to grow. Like the mountains, here to stand". This could be a good teaching point to bring up in conversation with younger ages. I think a great activity for this book is have the children further explore metaphors and ask the children what two things are being compared, and how they are alike or different.

3.RL.CS.4 Determine the meaning of words
and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language (e.g., feeling blue versus the color blue).

This book was recently brought to my attention and stood out to me because so many children have a hard time comprehending their feelings at such a young age and may feel overwhelmed when they experience more than one emotion. This text follows a young girl and her feelings due to daily experiences, further explaining the cause and effect aspect of emotions. It also elaborates on feeling more than one emotion and that this is normal and okay to experience. This is another text that I feel as if most elementary ages can benefit greatly from but if I had to choose I would say grades 1-3rd. An activity that would fit greatly with this text would be to have the students write about a time where they felt more than one emotion and provide context about why this happened. They then could draw a picture describing their experience.

1.RL.CS.4 Identify words and phrases in stories and poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

This text is one that I feel could be very useful in a classroom setting. It is about finding family-like relationships in the classroom by being respectful and showing kindness to one's peers. They give great examples of what a healthy classroom environment looks like and explains that a family can consist of people you are not directly related to, but people who love and care for you. I would recommend this book for kindergarten and first graders because the structure is simple as well as the vocabulary and all across message. An activity that children can do for this text would be having the students describe what family means to them and then sharing facts about them that make them unique. I think this activity fits well with the story because not only does it allow students to share characteristics about themselves, but allows other students to get to know each other better and connect.

2.FL.VA.7c Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and
responding to texts, including using adjectives and adverbs to describe.

The Day You Begin is a story about feeling different and how this can seem huge in a classroom setting. The text encourages readers to embrace their differences because it is what makes us unique, and even connects us in ways to others. It also shows that when we reach out and share our stories then some people might also relate, creating new friendships. This book is appropriate for grades kindergarten-1st. The sentence structures are moderately complex as well as the vocabulary presented throughout the text. An activity that would fit this book would be having the students write in a piece of paper something unique about themselves and crumble it up. Have the students throw their pieces of paper into a pile and take turns reaching into the pile and picking a random piece. The student will read this aloud and then the class can discuss what they might have in common with the said characteristic. I think this would be fun for students this age because it is interactive and they are able to connect with one another.

5.RI.CS.6 Analyze the similarities and differences in points of view of multiple accounts of the same event or topic.

Last Stop On Market Street is about a young boy who sees earthly possessions and thinks he wants them, but his nana teaches him the importance of experiencing things in a whole other way. This story reflects on embracing the beautiful things of the world when you are not always experiencing the best circumstances. This text is appropriate for grades 2nd-4th because of its complex meaning and moderate vocabulary presented throughout the text. One activity that the students may do in order to break down the meaning of the book is have them pick out certain events and then compare and contrast the way the young boy felt about it versus how nana felt about it. The events in this book do prove to be more appropriate for older children because so I would recommend it for grades 4th and up. These events include Wilbur being raised for slaughter and Charolette the spider dying, leaving her eggs with Wilbur. I believe this book tells the true story of friendship and loyalty. This book should be read because of its complex storyline and challenging vocabulary. One activity that can be that the children make newspaper articles about visiting Charlotte and Wilbur's farm. They can also write about Wilbur competing in the county fair. This would be a fun English project that the children could work on in groups.

4.SL.PKI.5 Add multimedia, such as audio and visual elements, to
presentations, when appropriate, to enhance the development of
main ideas or themes.

This book I also grew up reading and loved watching the movie with my family. This action packed text is about a family who survived a ship wrecked and are now faced with surviving island life. I think this is a great read for elementary aged students, particularly 4th and up, because it not only is an exciting story but challenges the students reading. This chapter book could be broken down into sections for the students to pay special attention to and many activities can come out of the material provided. The content includes complex sentences and tier 2 and 3 vocabulary that will challenge older students reading skills. One activity that children could do with this story is write an essay about what materials they would chose to have if they were stranded on and island and why. This text gives across a great message for elementary aged students and provides simple sentences. The story also has somewhat challenging vocabulary for younger children. The appropriate age for the text is kindergarten-3rd and I believe will be loved by many students. One activity that the children could do is to identify a theme in the story and further elaborate on why they think this is. For example one could say the theme is determination. Which character showed this? How did this character show determination? There are also vocabulary words presented describing the hair such as "kinks and coils" and as a class this could further discussion and word comprehension.

3.RI.KID.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they
support the main idea.

Ruby Finds A Worry presents a playful story about the emotion of worry. There is a large yellow spot that followed her around and the more she ignored it, the larger it grew. It kept escalating and growing, taking over her mind completely. It finally goes away when she opens up and talks about it with others. This is an essential book for young children because emotions can become overwhelming and I feel as if in today's world individuals are experiencing worry younger and younger. Children need to be given tools that help them cope and control these emotions when they feel like they are getting out of control and books like this can help them understand that it is normal. This text is appropriate for kindergarten-2nd grade because of its simple story line and vocabulary. Most words fall under tier 1 and it also includes simple sentences. One activity that children can do is to write what they do to cheer themselves up when they are feeling stressed or worried and share with the class.

1.FL.WC.4 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when encoding
words; write legibly.

I wanted to include this book because I am using it in my novel study and thought it would be great to begin introducing. This book is about an imaginary friend who was struggling to find the human who belonged to him. He then found a little girl who was exactly like him and did not have any friends. They immediately knew that they were meant for one another and became inseparable. This text is slightly complex due to its simple vocabulary and meaning. The appropriate age for this book would be grades preschool-3rd. The story teaches about friendship and could help students who may be struggling to find friends. One activity that children can do with this book is write sentences/ stories about the characteristics they want in friends. This can range in complexity with ages.

3.FL.WC.4 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when encoding
words; write legibly.
a.
