When nine-year old Mary Addison was accused of murdering a Caucasian baby, society did not accept Mary's alleged actions. Most people called for Mary's death. Instead the court sent her to a long sentence in jail. Six years later, Mary is living in a group home. Where she is forced to do chores and volunteer at an old-age home. There is where she meets Ted, her future boyfriend. Ted is not aware of Mary's tragic past. Mary becomes pregnant and the authorities plan on taking her baby away. Mary calls upon her mom to prove that she did not kill Alyssa in order to save her own baby. Will Mary not be able to raise her own baby because she allegedly killed Alyssa?
Though the novel was written in a very dark context and included mature content, Jackson's illusive usage of suspense and building of the conflict elevated the feel of the novel. From making it seem as if everything that we were told from the novel was a lie, to completely reversing the ending from where most predicted, Jackson had readers on their heels during the novel. I found the novel enjoying to read because of the factor of drama and irony Jackson demonstrated in her writing. For example, Jackson used a girl who was alleged of killing a baby to having a child at sixteen. Jackson's usage of description also amplified the reader's sympathy for Mary. This made the ending feel surprising for readers who were also happy for Mary, who could finally proceed to live her life the way she was meant to. So, will you pass out on a thrilling novel that will impress you in every aspect?
